Wanted to share a fabulous interview with Mike Tyson

I was done with Mike during the Hagler incident. They have made amends. And Mike seems to be a fairly cool dude.

I think he has gotten SOME perspective as he’s aged regarding how he considers other people. But he came from the violent streets into a violent sport so he’ll never fully lose that part of him.

I always liked Tyson. Funny thing- one of the two lead singers in my band is Irish Mike Jameson, an ex-pro boxer with an excellent Irish tenor (who woulda thunk?!), he was Mike Tyson's sparring partner for years, they're still buds. He fought Spinks and a bunch of others as well. Heckuva nice guy, salt of the earth!

That's my point. The man is charismatic, but you can just get the hint that there is some instability inside.

I had (work related) meetings with Tyson and Holyfield, separately in different cities, before their match. Both were surprisingly gracious. Mike Tyson was talking (and listening) to some kids who were hanging around when I got there. I was impressed by how respectful and nice he was to them. I could’ve done without his “entourage” but once I introduced myself Tyson pretty much told them to get lost. We talked, I went over what we needed to do (take some photos and sign off on some ads) and he couldn’t have been nicer. I remember seeing that Kodak, I think it was, commercial he did dedicated to his former trainer. It only aired one time. Tyson’s voice over breaks at the end of it; very emotional and moving. (Maybe his people killed the re-airing of the spot because of that.) Anyway, after that I always thought he was a lot more complex and interesting than how he was, and how he allowed himself to be, packaged. Meeting him that time only reinforced that notion.

I think Tyson has come a long way. Hated him early on. I used to refer to him as a "walking brain stem".
But he has become honest about himself and about improving himself and I kinda like Mike now!
He was truly a beast in the ring. Not so much my style of boxer, but ..... he was a dangerous man!

Given the circumstances he was born into and raised in I have to believe the vast majority of people would have ended up dead or in prison.

I actually think that Tyson is an under rated boxer. People see the ferocity and headhunting but they do not see the tactician and boxers mind at work, sure, he was scary enough to out psyche opponents but he was a genuine boxing great rather than a slugger that got lucky. Then came the court case and same as Ali he was out of the game at what was possibly his peak and you can never regain that peak after a prolonged break with no top of the shelf competitive boxing and the elite training and conditioning which go with it.

Re Marvin Hagler, an absolute legend. I remember sitting with my dad, an amateur boxer with trophies etc, watching on TV him take the title at Wembley. The fight with Tommy Hearns is boxing gold, two superb ring masters having an all out straightener, unreal, never gets old.
