I'm 5'7" and have got medium-sized hands and bought myself a short-scale Squier VM Jaguar bass a couple of years ago because my old G&L 5-stringer was killing my back. It works great if you're switching back and forth between the two; however, I've also had a few 34" basses and gotten used to them after a time. At least for me, it's more the width and depth of the neck than the scale length that limits me dancing around the fretboard like I do on my guitar. After playing my short scale for a while, I played a friend's MIM P-bass last year and loved it, so I built myself one using a GFS body and neck. Body is Paulownia, so it's lighter than my Strat.

Mine is just like this (see compared to regular scale). I LOVE the neck and the playability. 28.6 inch scale. And SUPER light. Can you tell I like it?;)

I was going to recommend a Gibson/Epihone SG bass, but damn those Ibanez basses look great too!

Fender Mexican Mustang PJ Bass or the less expensive Squier short scale Jaguar Bass. Happy hunting.
