I go between an MXR Micro Amp and Danolectro Fish n Chips eq. If you set the sliders on 'flat' you keep your original tone, and use the gain slider accordingly. Get that touch of hair just a bit of the way up...The MXR works great as well, though there is a little but of a treble bite as you go up the Gain knob , but I find it very appealing with the tele and clean amp, like a Don Rich "Act Naturally" lead sound is what I usually go for with this pedal.

Aren't Tube Sound Fuzz and its variations good choices for this role?

This guy plays a Blackstone into an SS Marshall:

IMO yes, IF (and ONLY if) it is the original TSF circuit. The Red Llama and all of the variations are way too dirty and distorted.

With the actual TSF, you can dial in just a hint of grit and retain all of your core tone. Most others will modify your EQ a bit.

The choices are mind boggling. A lot of this stuff I've never even heard of. I think I'll pick up a Sparkle Drive to start with a see how that works out.
Thanks for all the responses, I have a better idea of where to start.

Depending on the type of hair I am looking to add to the cleans I like Zendrive, JHS Open Natural (HBOD & SHOD combined) and the Screwdriver. The ZD is the smooth one here with other 2 more tweedy-swampy hair.

Just call up Brad and order a Earth Drive. I was just chatting with him about them today. I haven't had the chance to play one, but the demos on YouTube sound good and like what you are after. I believe he has 2 vids up there. He was telling me that Wilco just ordered 9 of em. I am sure he could tell you how it would do with your rig.

Other than that, I think sparkle drive is a good option.

I use a pork loin for the tone your describing. It has a clean blend knob on the pedal so you can adjust how much clean signal you want with the overdrive signal. Makes it a very versatile pedal. You can go from a great sparkley boost/overdrive tone to a heavier overdriven tone very easily. It dosen't to too heavy though which sounds great for what your aiming for.
