I haven’t thought about this purloined riff since the 80s when this saccharine slab from the alabaster duo first came out.*

C’mon - Is it because she was like 15 when the song came out so it slipped by her or because there’s probably so little money to be made retroactively suing Difford/Tilbrook ? Janie don’t miss too many available income streams...

    (Hendrix riff at 2:10)

    The original at :50

*I remember distinctly pulling out the album cry of love when I first heard the Squeeze song and saying “wait the hell a minute..” and - boom - there it was.

You're probably the only person in the world that put those two records together, Mike.
So, what kind of cut from the Hendrix estate do you want? :):):)

An influence but not any copying. Hendrix estate should be embarrassd to make the comparison. That solo might not even make me think of Hendrix. And for the most part, anyone who might notice similarites, would be a guitar playing Jimi fan.

Yeah, I don't hear infringement but I will say that Night Bird Flying has been one of my favorite songs/recordings since I first listened to it with dropped jaw at 15 years old. The Cry of Love is an amazing album.

(Incidentally, even though it isn't particularly germane, I once did a short tour in a band supporting Squeeze and they're great guys... I hope that the Hendrix estate doesn't see this thread and try to sue....))

Good catch, they clearly copied the lead hook from Night Bird Flying. In the context of the entire song I don't think it's a big deal.

That's one of my all time favorite Jimi tunes -- and I've always loved the guitar on that track. Whenever I listen to Cry of Love or Rainbow Bridge I can't help but think about how Jimi was getting better with each recording, especially with the sophistication of his arrangements and songwriting.

    .

Perhaps not missed .. likely already attempted and just couldn't slam them with a lawsuit.

The Axis of Awesome 4-chord game...

And a lawyer has copyrighted all the melodies anyway ...

Wow, you weren’t kidding! I know Jimi’s catalog well—if I had ever heard of that other song before, the mimicry would have bowled me over.

Yes - Lawdawg and nojazzhere for the win !

The solo in the Squeeze song is copied from the hook in the Hendrix song.

    Just that bit.

    Not anything else.

    But it’s clearly the same.

Whether it was conscious or not, it's too close to be a coincidence. But I've never heard either song before, so maybe the Hendrix estate decided it's not worth pursuing.

I clicked on this thread thinking it would be one of those things that sounded vaguely similar and open to interpretation... nope, that guitar player definitely listened to Hendrix and worked it out! So blatant, I hope he meant it as a tribute.

Google tells me a few other people have made this connection in the past, but it doesn't seem to have gotten a lot of mainstream attention: https://oklahoman.com/article/13271...on-of-outrageous-genius-and-tasteful-allusion

I would think that's the Hendrix estate has embarrassed themselves enough by now.

I don't think you can sue for just quoting a single small phrase from a guitar solo. A lot of famous guitar players have done it in their solos, quoting Hendrix, like Robben Ford, Neal Schon, and Randy California, among others.
