Do they work well with each other, or does the comp kill what the wah is trying to achieve?

    Which order?

Just looking for guidance to help my narrow down things a bit. I want to start using wah a bit differently now. Think "Before the Beginning" by John Frusicante (Empyrean). Such a beautiful tonality the wah offers.

Anyhow, I generally like comp for singing melodic leads, as I miss the sustain when it's off. But is it working against the wah?

Right now I've got the comp after the wah. I prefer the tone the other way around usually, but I like the comp to keep the harsh volume peaks under control.

    Your thoughts and experience?

Yep, they work well together, the basis for a lot of funk guitar. Comp before wah.

Yup, they work very well together. I run my compressor after the wah, which just goes to show how versatile the combination is.

It depends on the parts I'm playing : compressor > wah is ok for steady rhythm parts, but I largely prefer to disengage the comp for leads when wah is required.

ever try comp AFTER wah? My thought is that it can shave off the harsh peaks of the wah, but keep the dynamics intact.. sort of.

I'll play around with it I guess. Trying to minimize my fiddling with the board though! haha, ya right.

Actually, out of habit, I always run the comp first on my board. But, as you mention, I may learn something by trying the other way round (wah>comp). But, frankly, I suspect that (for me, at least), compression would tend to be an impediment when using the wah (I'm fine with controlling -well, more or less!- the harsh peaks with picking hand... and foot obviously).

IMHO, the guitar should be plugged directly into the wah, with the volume pot slightly backed : no more harsh peak or lousy overload : il you reach the sweet volume spot on the pot, you'll get pure Funk/Soul wah...

That's what I do for years. No need of any compressor... Overdrive, Delay or other effect should comes after the wah - nothing between the guitar and the wah. ;)

It's also possible that a compressor place after the wah would enhance the hiss of the wah. o_O

Some quick demo samples of direct guitar-to-wah plus backed volume pot configuration :

    But it's me, OK ? :D

I agree that for me the guitar directly into the wah is very advantageous, but a good compressor can really add icing to the cake. The secret is a good compressor.

I like a lot comp after wah for that reason, also after auto wah, some sort of synth and also after some pitch i don't mind....

I always run comp after wah as well. True bypass wah is even better for less tone sucking.

I agree. Sold my cry baby, got a cry baby mini. True bypass, 3 modes. Sounds amazing.

Come to think about it, might be time to experiment with the modes. I've had it on medium so far. Fasel I think

For me wah on Comp off. Comp on wah off. But reading the prior answers that is clearly just me.
