I bought my Tone Bender in Nashville in the 1990s.

My theory is that it is a V828 (rather than a Mk1.5 or similar) made in 1967
There's nothing in the wiring to suggest that this is anything but all original.
The only issue I'm aware of is the heatshrink I put on when the battery wires
    got slightly damaged.

It has SFT337 and SFT363e transistors in it - I think this means 1967 is likely ...
There is no cap under the board which I believe makes 1967 likely ...
The placement of the logo below the knobs makes it 66-67 I THINK ...

Can anyone help me be more certain / precise about the date?
    I couldn't find a Vox-specific forum easily ... can anyone suggest one?

    Many thanks,
    Danny

Man...I sold one to a forum member...I did him a big favor and sold it CHEAP because he had a very cool reason to want it.
When that reason evaporated, he wouldn't give me a similar buyback deal.
Like Gramma used to say, No good deed goes unpunished.
Anyway...it's one of the very few distortion pedals I ever loved.
I'd have to get another if I was ever to start a Badfinger tribute.

I'm almost positive that's a V828 based on the schems I've seen. The Tone Bender Mk 1 and Mk 2 were three transistor models. The V828 is a modified Fuzz Face with just two transistors.

    How's it sound?

Yeah, your interpretation of this pedal is pretty much spot on. I think some of the earliest were probably built in 1966, as the model does appear in a price list from the time, but those earliest units have different transistors, as well as the cap under the board, as you've observed.

The v828 was built in Italy, and appears to have been sold predominantly in the USA, by Thomas Organ.

They're almost certainly copied from the British two-transistor "MK1.5" Tone Bender, that was available at all sorts of different shops in the UK, during the first half of 1966 (including the Jennings shop in Dartford).

The only discussion board on the web where you can get pretty accurate information about vintage fuzz pedals is the D*A*M forum (https://stompboxes.co.uk/forum/index.php). Be very wary of articles/youtube vids about pedals online, as the content creators often just regurgitate unsubstantiated rumours/myths in a seemingly authoritative way.

You've just described the entire Internet in one half of one sentence, well done!

It works and to be honest, even when I bought it in the 90s it wasn't my cup of tea ...
I was into Vox because of AC30s and this is quite a different animal ...
It went into my drawer and has more or less stayed there for 25 years untouched

I'm not going to pretend that hadn't crossed my mind ...
With 3 teles I'm pretty sure I don't need any more though :)

    I've done a demo of sorts ...

I'm playing a strat through a Traynor YGM3 ... the Marshall thing is just not my thing
so I'm guessing that the sound isn't the way a lot of you guys would have it set up ...
I'm no a loud player in particular and don't really do the humbucker thing either
