I'm reading that 500k ohm pots sound brighter than 250k ones. The Telecaster is already a bit bright in tone . . .
what value are you most happy with ?

250k for single coils, 500k for humbuckers.

One has a Fender Nocaster neck pickup that I think sounds great as it is using the stock 250k. I've another which gets more playing time and has a Seymour Duncan Vintage Telecaster Rhythm/STR-1 I like more with a 375k volume pot.

    .

    250k on Strats and Teles
    500k on LPs and SGs
    1Meg on Jazzmasters

Don't forget that pots have a 20% tolerance range -- so measure what you've got.

500 on everything for me. A too-bright guitar can be tamed (I have at least 4 tone controls between my guitar, pedals, and amp) a too-dark guitar is hard to brighten up.

Also: They are so cheap you are better off doing your own experimenting than following anybody's advice.

250K that has a good (measured) taper with 10% or better tolerance which most with 10% have.

That's a pretty broad brush you paint with.

I agree it's easier to tone down than tone up.
Also for fingerstyle players who use the pads of the fingers, it's not as snappy as a pick.

My favorite tone control is a post phase inverter tone cut. Make everything into the phase inverter as bright as possible then tame it with the cut.

have 1 Meg on a few special purpose Humbuckers
I try to use linear "B" style pots on everything

Doesn’t a 500k pot give you more highs and a 250k pot gives you less?

I like (and use) the RS Guitarworks 280K pots for the Volume pot on Teles. Slightly hotter than the 250s and not as bright as the 500s. I'd probably really dig a 350K pot in that position, but haven't ran into one.

ibid . . and ya gotta remember... those have been THE choice for the vast majority of guitarists for over 60 years... during which just about all the other values ya wanna consider were available.. yet still.. . those two were the leading choice... that should suggest something...

if anything comes along that is actually, genuinely superior, we will hear about it.. the pros will be converting like an avalanche... until then.. 500, or 250... and with either ya still gotta know how to rock..

When both are turned up all the way or at least the majority, both will be at zer0 K. The 500K will have
a wider taper but not necessarily brighter. It just widens the taper. The wider seems to work best with
    P90s and humbucking.

Some of my Teles have 250, some 500, and one has 1meg (from the factory) .

    Just depends....
