Actually, a more apt word would be "pathetic." ;)

Excuse me, I have to go gas up my compensatory little red sports car now...

    :?:

Are you saying that women can't be artists? Or that you prefer women singers to sound like Leonard Cohen? I mean, Emmylou Harris sounds like a woman, and I've never cringed when listening to her.

    :D

I don't know if it's been mentioned or not but I dig Paul's vocal on Oh Darling. His range is off the chart but in a bluesy way

Don't you just know that when Josh Turner hits them low notes, he's thinking. " I'm so glad I'm not a girly man."

I agree. They are also cages that people try to put around others. Putting labels on others is one way to put a label on oneself. "I hate those girly-man singers" is one way to identity oneself as a so-called manly man.

Conversely, this was the last time I was dismayed (mildly) to discover there were no women in this group. Hmm.

Tom Jones (check out his gospel album -- sure surprised me: 71 and a huge, controlled voice)

i used to work with this crotchety old guy who hated everything on the radio, one day he goes to change the station when "fly by night" by rush is playing...he says "anything sounds better than that screaming woman!" i started to correct him, then just shrugged and said "yeah, youre right" haha

Sounds like sour grapes to me. I'd take the ability to range between my normal rumbly basso-baritone to a soaring counter tenor in a heartbeat.

I'm very tall, so I never felt any pressure (i.e. in high school, which is where that sort of thing takes root) to slavishly conform to those kinds of faux-masculine attitudes and affectations.

Oh sure, first only short guys get to be fighter jocks, now you tell us they make th ebest lead singers, too? Life isn't fair!

Too short for basketball, too tall to sing. I'm going to sue my parents.

Listen. I love both guys' music a lot.

But. Neither of them achieved the position of high praise from me, based on the quality of their voices. At least on paper, both of these voices are not commercial grade. They're not "better quality" voices.

It is the content of their character and their soul that got them home.

I think the higher your range, the better vocalist you had better be.

We talk about the Telecaster's ability to "cut through" the mix. In some settings, that higher voice can be heard better with those old sound systems. I'm for what works.

Gee man when it comes to the crooning rock ballad Morrison i don't hear a destroyed voice on You're Lost little Girl, Can't See Your Face In my Mind, Indian Summer, Summers Almost Gone, The Spy etc. etc.
La Woman well yea to a point but he sounded ballsy as hell on that album & perfect for the material.

Me too. I've got a good sounding lower range, but I'm constantly trying to improve the upper part of my voice. Some people have that naturally and I'm not one of them.

The guy with dark hair from that Dukes of Hazard television show is just such a singer. It's just sickening how low and how high he can sing.
