After seeing the Stones on Friday, my next mission was a visit to this legendary guitar Mecca.
Wow, just wow. How I emerged without yet another guitar is beyond me! I was strong, friends. I brought my adult son with me, his look of growing boredom helped me to keep moving, lol. But even he was impressed by the candy in this candy store. Lots of amazing axes in there. The staff was cool, inviting me to play anything I wanted.
Before leaving, I wanted to get a T-shirt that had a cool Chicago graphic integrated with the CME logo. The size I wanted wasn’t hanging there, so the guy asked someone to fetch me a size large. Meanwhile, we’re chatting about the Stones concert, etc... Then he asked me if I’d ever been to the store before, and I said no, but I had purchased my olive green CME exclusive player Tele from them. Of course, I had to show him how cool it looks with the Tort pick guard I put on it!
So, the girl brings up the shirts, and he hands me a large, and says “it’s on me”.
Now, how freaking cool is that?
Here’s a few pics. Don’t mind the homely guy.

I visited there several months ago for the first time and it was just about overwhelming. I also got out of there without buying a guitar. It was just amazing! I plan to make a return trip in August and the bank account may be used this time.

I have to visit this place one day. I haven’t been to Chicago in 5 years. I did order a guitar from them online and the customer service and packaging were solid.

Pretty amazing place. I live about 12 miles from the store, but it takes me an hour to get there (and an hour to get back). I've bought one guitar from them, since sold, and I bought THAT off Reverb. Drove the 12 miles to the store and picked it up because I didn't want to wait. I think I've bought a few straps and pedals from them and had them shipped to me.
I played a Meteora just like the one you're holding at GC a week or so ago and liked it a lot.

Okay, there's no way I would have left without a Rickenbacker ...

    Woow, just wow!!

Thanks so much for sharing this.
I'm dreaming of visiting this store sometime in the future (and since I live in Israel it won't be the near future).

The wall of Les Pauls

I went in there once, didn't have a lot of time, found a really nice J45, had to leave it, played the '55 Strat, and thought good Lord, I should make a day trip just to scratch the surface.

They have little practice rooms to try things out.

It's really useful to play a bunch of guitars all of the same model. The really good ones will pop out. Trains your ear. You can't get that opportunity at most places.

    Oh, YEAH!

To hell with haunting Notre Dame (all due respect to that now-pained place). I'm coming back to hunchback around the CME when I'm dead.

    If I'm lucky.

Played a Custom Shop '56 Strat (I think) there about two years ago that I still literally dream about, monthly. I was the proverbial fool for not selling a few left kneecaps and getting it.

I was impressed by the staff, as well. No pressure, but very helpful. Let me roam and try things at will. Nice neighborhood, too! Where Chicago isn't dangerous it's a fantastic city.

I've bought from them online. Very nice interactions each time. Seem like quality folks.

I believe the Chicago Music Exchange actually started reverb.com, or at least the owner did.

On my bucket list, and yes Reverb and CME are tightly connected (one reason I like and trust Reverb).
