I've been gassing for a tele with twisted tele pickups and a rosewood board. Don't like the colors of the Vintera 50s modified and of course no rosewood. I figured no big deal I'll get an American pro 2 and change the pickups. Can't get a black telecaster with a rosewood fretboard. I'm debating building one but I'm wondering if and when Fender will update the colors on the 50s modified. I could live with a maple board if I can buy a guitar that I don't have to modify, the 50s modified would work except the color. I don't pay much attention to how often the colors are updated, just wondering what my chances are of getting a black 50s modified in the near future or should I just go ahead and build one.

IIRC, Fender do a black Fender Player Telecaster. It might be a lot cheaper buying one of those, and adding the pickups you like. You could always get a rosewood neck down the road.

It's just my speculation/opinion but I don't see black becoming an option on that model, it doesn't seem to fit the motif of a modified 50s Telecaster. Come to think of it you will never see I e with a rosewood fingerboard, Fender does maple on generic 1950s models and rosewood on generic 1960s models as a differentiator.

However finding the Twisted Tele pickup set is easy and they can be installed in any black with rosewood Telecaster you come across.

I did the math and I can build one with am American rose wood neck and twisted teles for about $1200.00. looks like that's the way to go. BTW, to show you how things have changed, I bought a Olympic white American standard strat in 1999 and they didn't come with a maple neck that year. I was able to call Fender and order one with no up charge.
