$55,000 for a '61 Strat with a replacement bridge pickup that looks like an Atrec you can buy for $15 online? I would take that deal. Probably not a real deal anyway.

I remember that episode. It made me wonder why no one asked if he still had the original bridge pickup. Yes, I'm a nerd.

I guess the main reason why I find this video bitter sweet is the lack of love that is shown here to a venerable old strat. Obviously nothing is looked up close nor taken into real consideration, besides the amount of money it will make. But then, as you say @ScottJPatrick, probably not a real deal.
I do not have TV at home, only watch it on vacations, but I've seen a few "Pawn Stars" episodes, and it seems to be the case for pretty much everything. To stick to the genre, I find "American Pickers" to be much more enjoyable.

Now that is very interesting. I never thought to look it up, but now that you post it the guitar does have that hollow body mid-tone to it.

I thought the same thing when I saw this several days ago. Especially since they called in a so called expert to evaluate and appraise it. Without the history this guitar had, an average Joe would’ve probably been lucky to get $5k-$6k for it.

I'd like to know why there is an Allen key under the jack plate/ferrule.

The $55K did more for Vic at this stage of his life than the Strat. In the end, it’s an instrument. It’s was tool used in his shop. Other than the history and sentiments that it has attached, it’s an object.
Gilmour sold his Black Strat, Martin D35, Martin 12 string among other items, and said as much.

I’m sure Mr. Flick got more enjoyment from the cash.

It’s similar to decisions that people on this forum make everyday. I’ve parted with many guitars over the years and, for some, it was a difficult decision. I will no doubt part with more. The guitars I have remaining are here because I couldn’t let them go but that will change at some point. C’est la vie.

It’s definitely not the fact he sold it that made me a bit sad. It’s the way.
To quote your example, David Gilmour’s guitars were shown a lot of respect when auctioned. As old artefacts as much as for their contribution to 20th century music history.
Business does not have to be just about figures, especially when dealing with those kinds of things.
