Can a 2x10 '74 Vibrolux Reverb amp be run with one 12" speaker? Is there anything else that has to be done other than getting a speaker baffle for a 12".

Thanks, I didn't know that. I am not happy with the way my Mojotone speakers respond to overdrive pedals and I have a few 8 ohm speakers that I was curious in trying.

It always seems like a good idea, to me.
As Axis23 mentioned, get a 4 ohm 12 inch speaker that will handle 30-50 watts RMS.
Keep us posted!

I would stick with the 2x10 format and just upgrade to new 10" speakers.

I don't recommend using an 8 ohm speaker load for permanent use.

One weber 10a150 [or 10a125] and one 10f150t. Or the 10f150t with a p10r or blueframe alnico works well as pairs.

I still have a 210 open back cab loaded with a p10r and 10f150t and consider it a permanent piece of gear.
Used it originally with a BMR and when the BMR sold the cab stayed, was not for sale actually...

If you want it to be a tad looser, do the 10F150 without the T. Although I have not done that pair. How the 'T' wants to stay clean I am thinking is a strong part of the reason this pair is very good. As it sounds great with the alnico Eminence or the P10R equally to my ear.

BTW; blue frame is same as Eminence 1028k.

Either way two 8 ohms drivers in parallel will net a 4 ohm load.

Signature series are very good yet inexpensive

Not spending more for the Vintage Series... After all, the driver is what turns electric into what our ears actually hear. Better is always better. ;)

I had a Sig 12 Alnico once though and actually liked it better than a 12A150 I had. Until I turned it up and pushed it hard.

I have a '68 Bandmaster Reverb (which is essentially a Vibrolux with a mid control) that I have turned into a 1x12 combo, and a friend of mine has a '69 Vibrolux, bought off ebay already converted to a 1x12 with a Weber P12N, and we both think that they are absolutely fantastic amps as 1x12s. For me, I would go so far as to say that it is the perfect Fender amp - perfect size/weight and wattage, good to go in any situation, with any drummer.

Initially, I tried a bunch of different 8ohm speakers, because they are readily available, and came to the conclusion that the amp's 4ohm output paired with 8ohm speakers just attenuates a little too much high and low end for my ears - I am looking for bright and twangy with a big bottom end, and that combination is just too mid-oriented for me. I bought an Eminence GA-SC64 for my DRRI and felt it was the best vintage-styled speaker for a Fender that I had ever heard, so I special ordered a 4ohm one from Eminence for my Bandmaster combo, and I am now totally set as far as Fender tones go - I even traded my DRRI for an AC30 as a result.

There are a lot of guys on here that will nay-say, and tell you that you are stupid for considering that 1x12 mod, and that two tens in a Vibrolux is is God's own choice for an amplifier and such, but I grew up a Eddie Van Halen devotee, so I am also very much a hot-rodder by nature (that wild young kid throwing humbuckers in a Strat utterly changed the world) and have no hesitation whatsoever to mod things when chasing the tones I am after. Now, that is with one caveat - I don't hack up or irrevocably mod any vintage gear - but other than that, I say go for it. Changing out a baffle is no big deal and easily reversed, and it might just prove to be what you are looking for. It certainly worked for me and my buddy, and I highly recommend it!

When I had my '69, I was running a Rajin Cajun and a modern Jensen C10Q. What a glorious sounding amp it was! The combo shouldn't have worked, but it really did...

In other 2x10 amps I have, I've had good results with mixing alnico and ceramic. I have a C10R and an Eminence Alnico Blue in one cabinet that's just spectacular. A C10R and a P10R in my Vibroverb, another great mix.

I might suggest Eminence 1058 and 1028 as an interesting combo.

Of course, i probably should have asked what it was you didn't like about your Mojotone speaker before just throwing speaker suggestions out there.

I'd suggest you take your amp, guitar and pedalboard to a shop you trust with some experience with speakers. Play at the volumes you normally play and talk to them about what you like and don't like. Maybe they can help you dial in the amp better for clean and overdriven.

A 2x10 overdriven Fender Vibrolux is a classic, as others note. You might want to turn the Bright switch off if playing at low volumes and getting your distortion from pedals.

I don't know anything about your speakers, but I suspect they may be a red herring here.

But there are so many variables it is difficult to get anything more than "list my favorite speaker" in a thread like this.

I'd not so summarily dismiss the experiences of a lot of folks here. Especially when you see common denominators. Simply search for era and type Fender amps. It is just as possible IMO to get it wrong as with the amp guy that will happily charge you again to get you where you yourself may not actually know where you want to go.

The '74 has a fixed baffle so you won't be able to replace it.

I've tried more than a few sets of speakers, in my '64, and love the pair of Celestion Gold 10's I have in it now.

I have been looking into both the Celestion gold and the Warehouse offerings. What are your opinions on how they respond to dirt pedals
