I know there are some big fans here. I'm trying some Ry Cooder techniques and open D slide movie sound track stuff. Got any recommendations of where to go from there?

Try open G, a strat and a glass slide, with a little dirt on the amp. A little compression (Orange Squeezer variety) and some tremolo help.

You might put a bit of tremolo on your amp too. Wink.

This is the lesson that caught my attention. Interesting technique that seems to fit what I like. Thanks.

Ry's one of my all time favorites.

If you want to know one of Ry's main influences check out Joseph Spence. It's where he got that Caribbean "rolling sea" rhythm and sense of timing.

I tend to like the D/A/D/G/A/D better than the Open D. It's just the G string sounds better in G than the F# to me. Funny thing thing is when playing my 4 string CBG's tuned G, I'll tune usually tune it G/D/F#/B.

My best friend and guitar mentor would totally agree with you. For some reason DADGAD does not resonate with me compared to Open D. I'm just a simple blues guy at heart I suppose.

Yes try open G tuning. Also he plays very much on the "off-beat" in his Rhythm style. Particularly in his last album "Prodigal Son" and there are some great Youtube clips of his variety of styles and bands. Been a BIG fan ( my bro-in-law also ) since 1978.
I like his mixture of cultural influences, particularly Mexican , Cuban and old Gospel. As well as his own. You mention Paris, Texas etc. A lifetime's worth of study in one man who was playing with the Stones in 1967 ( he was 21 then).
I'm still betting he taught Keith Richards G tuning and ,indeed, wrote Honky Tonk Women or at least it's solo.
Even in his early days he shines on Little Sister and other songs. He's highly alert to every nuance.
Too much to say and praise one of the world's best musicians. He understands every move he makes.
A guy in England also makes Coodercasters, with Teisco pickups and some gold foil - see Youtube.
The guys a genius- nuff said.

I'm a big open G fan and plays all sorts of stuff in it. "Prodigal Son" really sounds great to me and certifies how great his career has been. He does seem to be very complex to get a good grasp of his style. I dig his Mexican and gospel influences and probably what attracts me so much.
