Mesa Boogie SPAX12AX7 tubes are $23.99 each, about the cost of a full synthetic oil change for 5 tubes. 5 years between tube changes. A year between oil changes if you don’t drive much. It’s the cost of necessary maintenance.

I have 2 63 year old Tung Sol in my Tweed Deluxe. The preamp replacements are Groove
Tubes. My McIntosh 30 watt power amps have McIntosh tubes from the 60s.

NOS tubes in the states have always been a lot more expensive and I saw the prices last night on the links in my posting. That's why I'm not buying any of them.

I don't want to know...I stockpiled tubes about 12 years ago and hope they outlast me.

I haven't noticed any rise in prices from 2019 to 2021 for NOS tubes from dealers like Audio Tubes, Doug's Tubes, and KCANOS. They're held steady. Some dealers like Tube Depot have always defined the price ceiling. I don't buy unless there's a sale that brings their prices down to match the other dealer's prices.

I buy dirty old tubes from disreputable sellers.
Around $10 each is about right.
    Carry on!

Do you have any established criteria by which you deem them disreputable?

I believe there are less than a handful of factories, maybe 3, making tubes for the whole world based in places like China, Russia and Slovenia

as I mentioned elsewhere, there are maybe 3 factories in the whole world making them. The good thing if you are a tube amp devotee is that they made a comeback for use in HiFi or Audio amps...

Through the tube dealers, they are priced out of reach. I have recently and in the past, lucked out.

For power tubes, my amps take EL84 tubes. There seems to be an abundance of Soviet 6P14P-EV equivalent tubes, if you don’t mind buying from Eastern European vendors. I’ve scored a few pairs and paid around the same for new JJs. If they last as long as reputed (>5000 hrs), I have tubes for life. I can report that one pair I have in action are easily over 1500 hours as I’ve been using them for years in my main amps. They’re still running strong.

On the preamp tube side, I’ve also been fortunate. About six years ago, my family rented a vacation home in Central Western Ontario. There was an antique radio shop nearby, seemingly operating in the ‘middle of nowhere’. I scored a pair of NOS-NIB Dutch, Rogers-branded Philips 12AX7 tubes for $50. I’ve been using them since and they recently tested ‘9/10’ on an Orange tester. I just bought another batch from the same shop. For $24 each, I scored two British Mullards 12AX7s and three Dutch Philips ones. All were pulls and therefore, used. However, the chap from the shop tested them as new.

If these all check out, I’m in NOS tubes for life.

Russian Tung-Sol pricing has always been all over the place. They have some types which are reasonably priced (although never the cheapest if you compare to other brands) and others which cost quite a lot.

    Damn.

My Super Reverb is in the shop. It blew a fuse, tech place told me it's likely the power tubes but to bring it in just in case. So, I checked the power tubes and they're the EHX ones they installed/matched brand new like a year or two ago when it was previously serviced!

I feel like I'm going to get gouged with the repair bill they're months late on. Uhg.

Like the price of gasoline & diesel, propelling us into an EV, and in the case of tubes, digital modeling paradigm.

One of the reasons I taught myself how to service tube amps.

I would say that over the last 55 years when I have replaced preamp tubes, I did it because I thought I needed to, but really didn't. I bet every used preamp tube I own is still good.
