I typically split the difference and try to get NOS or demo guitars from reputable dealers.
Never bought a used guitar in my life. Came close a few times in pawn shops, but there was always a deal breaker flaw that turned me off. Its also hard to insure used instruments for their true value. I do like to buy MIM models of Fenders and create my own parts-casters. I find instruments made to my own personal tastes very appealing.
Wow!! Great write up! Thanks for taking the time to do that!! And I’m with you. I do a lot of those same things. I have yet to find a deal like the ones you mentioned, but I know they’re out there!
I have two teles that I bought new, and another one that I bought used. Alas, they are all used now.
Theres no category of Telecaster that goes unexplored in my unnecessary endless love story. I lean towards Used but they keep on putting out new colors like that Ultra Tele black oil one that doesn't exist on the used stuff.
I gotta admit that I have picked up a few cool "previously owned" instruments, but it was lucky, for the most part, and not usually something that I was actually looking for. I think that I have "bottom feeder" tendencies because a good, cheap guitar will hook me every time.
My biggest hurdle is: I. Hate. To. Shop.
If I get the itch, I have to scratch.
whatever I can afford at the time.
I've always been a lot happier with used instruments.
Except for blues harps. And I'm thinking of getting a melodeon. I don't think used melodeons exist. They probably self-destruct too fast.
