UPS just dropped off my first Tele! Now, the agonizing wait to open the box!

It was 15 below when my Chris Shiflett Tele arrived.

    I gave it 10 hours.

I’ve had a 70’s Tele pop and check from cold and I’ve had a Martin OM16GT crack on top.

The Tele looked like a shattered mirror.

It really sucks. It really really really sucks. Don’t mess with Mother Nature.

    Wait it out!
If it gets too tough, just lay down on the floor next to the box.
Tell the guitar about all the future fun you have planned for the two of you.

    Use the time to bond:p

    I’m thinking the same thing.

Like, should he sit it in a bathtub of water before opening?

If it was exposed to 15 below, it cracked before opening the box.

Once it’s in the house, it’s gonna get to room temp in less than an hour anyway.

Just my opinion on it, but I don’t think the science supports waiting hours.

I edited my post. A mistake.

Should he sit IT in a bathtub, like you put the new fish into the tank in the same Baggie you got from the store, so the water temperature slowly equalizes.

I always open my box immediately so the wife won't see it. The guitars had no problems.

You can make things go a little faster by opening one end of the outer box. That will speed up the process considerably. If there's an inner box, open that a little also.

The box is not airtight. The warm air in the house mingled with the air in the box as soon as it came inside.

Just what space age technology does everyone think this guitar came wrapped in that slowly allows the guitar to warm up at just the right pace? It’s likely wrapped in a big plastic bag and then some bubble wrap and definitely not airtight. It came to room temp within an hour tops.

You have some incredible self control. I'd've opened the box right away. Now stop teasing us and upload some pictures.

Question for you: If you stick your hand in that box right now what temp do you think the air is in there?

I open the boxes but let the case closed. A shipping box will keep that case cold just like it keeps the cold off of your body if you sleep on it outside in the cold. Cardboard and newspaper are two good cheap insulators; ask some folks that live outdoors.

An MIM Player Tele doesn't come in a case or a gig bag; it's just double-boxed. I suppose he could have taken the inner box out but not opened it.

I was under the impression this only applies to nitro finishes?

People pay extra for that whether it’s from age, opening your box too soon or factory done. And no one really cares if you owned it while it occurred.
