This is where I answer with "1"

I find that Apple continues to move away from the "user friendly" ideal that it has been famous for, for the past 15 years. The iTunes of 6 years ago was much better than the monstrosity it is today

If you backed up prior to upgrade (best practice fo sho) then you can restore to your last backup.

if you are running 10.6.8 and have a machine that cannot move to newer OS's, you are kind of done in the new ecosystem... so, it is 'best' that you let the ipad be independent and 'move on'...

both are decent options.

I have updated all of our devices to IOS9 without issue.

I was at a meeting last week and ran into an issue with a friends phone. I was able to restore and fix it and then update it... it was due to poor user maintenance...

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to go buy an external HD, back up the iMac, and try to get Yosemite on it; that will let me upgrade to the latest iTunes, and then things should be copacetic. I don't think we'll be able to stretch to the next OS after that.

Which will soon lead to a tiresome conversation with the wife about getting a new computer...

The plot thickens...

Checked out iTunes 12.3. Turns out it needs OS X version 10.8.5 or later, and I've only got 10.6.8.

When I ran a software update check, it said I'm all current. Does that mean I've been left behind on the update path? My machine is about 5 years old...

I'm going to have to wipe this iPad and re-install my latest back-up somehow, aren't I?

I'm posting this from a late 2009 MacBook Pro (Core2Duo), running the latest version of Yosemite.

'Kay, I'm up to speed. Took 6 hours and I broke Microsoft Office, but now I can sync my iPad again. Pretty sure this is the last major OS update my iMac is going to be able to take...

Thanks to all for the advice.
