An old friend of mine came up from Philly last week, and we spent a couple of days just hanging out and playing guitars (we also visited Chelsea Guitars in NYC, but that's another thread). My friend has always had a thing for my old '66 SG Junior, and he asked me point blank if I'd consider selling it to him. After sleeping on it for a night, I agreed to let him have it - it had been relegated to the studio, and my friend plays out around the Philly area and I figured that guitar had to be out and played loud. I gave him a good price and the SG went off to Philly.
When I told my wife I'd sold the SG, she jokingly asked 'So there's a new guitar coming soon?' She knows me well...
I went browsing on Reverb and saw an EVH Wolfgang Standard 'Exotic' with a Koa top. Showed it to the wife, she approved of the finish, and I ordered it this morning.
The shop is up in Putnam County, and they got it into the hands of UPS this afternoon. It'll arrive tomorrow, at which point I'll update with new pics and a quick review.
I've wanted an EVH for a while, so it'll be cool to add this one to the collection. I kinda hated to see that old SG go, but the EVH will ease the pain a bit.
EDIT: I got it this afternoon. Here's a pic of the actual guitar I got:
First impressions...
This thing is light as a feather! Even in the box, it barely clocked 12 pounds, and if I had to guess I'd say the guitar's around 7 pounds. The Koa top looks pretty nice - not much figuring, but I'm not really a fan of figured tops anyway so I'm cool with it. They taped off the sides of the Koa top to give it the look of natural 'binding,' which is pretty cool. The baked maple neck is slim and fast, with the oil finish on the back. The profile is really comfortable and fret work is top notch, nice rolled edges.
The neck feels kind of small to me, but I'll chalk that up to the fact that I've been playing an R8 Les Paul for the past couple of weeks, and after that chonky '58 neck just about anything would feel small. I'll be playing it steadily tomorrow during the day, so I should be pretty used to it by the time I gotta leave for my gig tomorrow evening.
The build is quite solid, no unwanted gaps or spaces where there shouldn't be any. Everything is tight, including the cavity covers. I pulled them in order to take the plastic off and do some stup on the Floyd and they were in there so tight I had to fight to get them off! I'll probably take the Dremel to them so they come out a little easier in the future if I need to do any further adjustments.
The Floyd was floating a bit when I took it out of the box, but I'm ordering a D-Tuna for it so I decked it. A lot of guys swap out the EVH-branded Floyd for a Gotoh trem, but I don't see any problems with it yet so it'll be on there a while. The action was pretty high out of the box, but a few turns of the bridge studs and I got the action right where I like it.
The Wolfgang pickups are pretty hot, but they clean up pretty nicely and they put a treble bleed circuit in it so they don't muddy up at lower volumes. It's got full-size pots (which I didn't expect on a made in Indonesia guitar!) which are plenty smooth with a nice taper.
I put a strap on it and slung it over my shoulder, and I noticed that it sits a little more 'body-forward' than I'm used to - the top cutaway is a little further to the left. Makes for easier access to the top frets, which I guess was the idea.
A little glitch in the delivery - I got the trem arm and all of the allen wrenches, but no switch tip. But I called the store and they're mailing one out to me today and I should have it tomorrow.
And... while moving it around while i was setting up the Floyd, I moved a little too fast and hit the edge of the table and put a nice dent in the back of the guitar. So I guess it's mine for real now.
Anyway - This guitar rocks. Lots of bang for the buck. Two thumbs up, 5 stars, etc.
