This morning I was driving through part of the state park in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and I see this sign.

    Gulf State Park.jpg

I assume they thought this was a clever way to draw attention to the speed limit.

I’ve seen 11 mph inside a refinery. I got in trouble for driving my forklift too fast.

Eleven MPH is the speed limit inside all of the Boeing complexes as well, and they are very serious about it-even bicycles.

I am going to think that the result of that design is an indicator of the level of cognitive processing of the designer and is a sad commentary on the educational system that misrepresented that person’s achievements so as to enable an employer to give that person any level of responsibility.

If you look closely you'll see it is actually 2.6 mph.

I was stopped by a hand held radar toting officer riding a road bike 26 mph in the parking lot of the Martha’s Vineyard ferry in Woods Hold, MA. The cop wasn’t busting chops. He laid it on the line for me.
    1. The speed limit is 10.
    2. Pedestrians don’t expect you and can’t hear you coming.
    3. 26 is too fast to stop for a car backing out of a parking space. And the driver won’t see you coming.
    4. The speed limit on the bike path is 15. Use the roads if you want to ride faster.
    5. If you have an accident you’re not insured and the jury won’t care.
Sometimes a stern warning is enough.

    Yes....I recall one.

We were a house band (Ambush) for 3 years at a club called Mt. Charley's (Los Gatos, Ca.).
From home me and a band member took a winding back road (I think it was old Quito road) into Los Gatos.....the sign said 19 miles an hour.

    Carry on....

If you will look very closely, you will see that the attachment bolt is placed in exactly the wrong place. It is a design flaw. Both of the holes for the attachment points should have been placed closer to the edges of the top and bottom. Had the design intended for the attachment bolt to BE the period between the 2 and the 6, a proper design would have printed the sign so that that ‘period’ formed by the bolt was on a line with the bottom of the numerals….as a proper period would be.
I will admit that 26 MPH is an odd number, but it is more rational than 2.6mph. No matter what the intention, I still hold that there is a failure in the educational system.

Old Miss fans got to see this sign for years after the 1972 loss to LSU due to timekeeping.

i lived in a town where the county 40mph roads would slow down to 25 regardless of the terrain or busy-ness...and then go back up to 40 when you left the town limits literally 1-2 minutes later. i swear one of the 25mph zones could have been no more than two or three blocks (yeah, in the northeast town borders get split up literally at intersections). it was the most irritating thing. just some eighth of a mile or less BS for cop traps and pretending you're "protecting the kids" or whatever nonsense.

That's the south. I've run into that all over the place in Georgia.

There are 18mph around here. Usually on roads with heavy pedestrian and bike traffic.

I knew a state trooper who pulled a woman over for 55 in a 40. She said she just passed a sign that said 55. He explained that it was route 55. Route 55 terminates at route 97. He told her it was good he got her when he did.

I have seen some odd speed limit signs most where set so if you where using a automatic transmission it would keep shifting from first to second and back to first.

Germantown TN used to have these signs up years ago, they are putting some up again for the 70th annual Germantown Charity Horse show.
