That's interesting because my experience was the opposite. I had all but quit playing guitar by the early 90s because I wasn't hearing anything that moved me. Guitar playing seemed to have turned into an athletic competition. Every week there was a new stud playing a million notes a minute on a pointy guitar, often in the context of a sappy hair metal ballad. Nirvana brought emotion and energy back to rock music. IMHO of course.

i was delighted when Nirvana killed all the hair metal bands. oh, happy day.

Though I’ve never seriously studied anything, I did consider myself a serious, professional working musician, even in my callow youth.
When they “hit the scene” I wrongly (very wrongly) assumed that the B52’s were, uh, less than worthy of their success.
At the time my then-girlfriend, and future ex-wife suggested I go see them.
I did, at the Armadillo World Headquarters, in 1980.
I “got” them instantly.
They were so much fun!

They were one of my first concerts...on the Cosmic Thing tour!

Blues as a contemporary, meaningful expresssion more or less died in the 70s. Starting in the 80s, the vast majority of blues recordings suffered from over-production and most blues artists lost connection with the expressive vocality that used to make electric blues guitar soloing so vital. Blues guitar was largely reduced to penatonic box exercises, rote licks and vapid noodling.

From the late 70s onwards, blues artists and recordings that are worth listening to are few and far between.

You might want to check out Tinsley Ellis, Jimmie Vaughan, Samantha Fish and Luther Allison. Just sayin'...

I think Albert Collins put out some quite good stuff in the 80s too.

*This and the above post not meant as "unpopular" opinions.

Barry Manilow is one of the greatest musical geniuses of our time, as is Englebert Humperdinck.
My grudge against Englebert:

One could say that Englebert is the reason Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields are not on the Sgt. Pepper album. George Martin claims they were forced by the record company to release a single to compete with Englebert. They did, but Englebert still won! So props to the Humpman.

Graham Nash. Hitched a ride, totally overrated. A couple of cute tunes but so expendable in CSNY. Just get a backup harmony guy. Also wish he'd resist telling us how great he/they were. Every interview. CSNY = 2 elites, 1 near-elite - and a got-lucky crooner.

How is that an unpopular opinion? Because everyone and their dawg seems to think so.
Well I thought all the Fabs fans would be be coming for me with fangs bared. And a couple others too. But I’m happy if Rays excellence is accepted.

Cheers,
Geoff

My opinion: 83% of the talent in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young was Stephen Stills. When Young left, Stills became 97% of the talent in Crosby, Stills and Nash and Graham Nash was 2 of the remaining 3 %. Crosby was just a drunk old hippy riding their coattails.

Next unpopular opinion: Neil Young plays guitar like Bob Dylan plays harmonica and if you think that's a compliment to either, music probably isn't your thing.

I think every member of C,S,N,&Y were brilliant, and masters of their art.
They collaborated, and conflicted with each other equally.
