At 2:00 this afternoon a coworker asked if I had any plans tonight, I did not. He said: “I’ve got tickets to Lynyrd Skynyrd at the T-Mobile arena. Wanna go?” So of course I say yes, after work I run home and change, pick him and another friend up and head into Vegas. Get to the arena, we thought 30 min late. But right after we sit down we discover that we haven’t even missed the opening act yet. We were very surprised to see Bad Company opening for Skynyrd!! We’re at intermission right now, Bad Co. was awesome, super excited for Skynyrd!

Wait...I have to check the date of this post...8 minutes ago? What happened to Skynyrd's last farewell tour forever from a couple years ago? These geriatric hillbillies have no shame. I mean, "no shame" is what made them famous in the first place...that and an extreme attrition rate, but jeez, when the confederate flag became a no-no so did they.

I would not pay to see the current group of musicians claiming to be Lynyrd Skynyrd... but I would go for free.

    My Skynyrd story:

Circa 1999... the band I was in scored a production deal which paid for a month of rehearsals at SIR. This was the premiere place to rehearse back then. In fact, tons of music videos were shot there, because it basically mimicked the set up of a full-sized arena. Not some dood's basement.

Our first day there, we were loading in all of our equipment, getting everything set up, getting sounds and tones and such. After a few hours, we finally got to start the run through for our first song. I stopped for a restroom break. Walked down the hall. Went into the restroom. Been at the stall for a few seconds when someone else comes in and starts his business too. I glance out of the corner of my eye and then turn to see that it's Rickey Medlocke.

As we finished up and washed our hands, I greeted him by his last name. He said, "Just Rickey." We talked for a minute, and I invited him to come check out my set up. He walked down the hall with me and I showed him my amps and guitars. He seemed to dig it. He told us that his band was rehearsing down the hall, and invited us to come check it out. It was the late 90s version of Skynyrd. We met Billy Powell. Gary Rossington. Leon Wilkeson.

Pretty cool stuff. We bumped into them for the rest of the month.

Is the current line up a cartoonish version of the real Skynyrd from the mid-70s. Yes indeed. But they're still smoking musicians.

Not sure why people chose to crap on your unexpected concert night, buts sounds like fun to me.

The Yankees are not the same Yankees as when Joe Nameth was playing and people still go see them, why do people get so hung up on who is in a band? A night of good songs, played well by professional musicians is a joyous occasion no matter what names are in the band.

Sounds like you had a great time.

Good on ya! Sounds like it was a blast. This guy (Gary, not me) and Larry Junstrom are the last of the original Skynyrd's.
