Other than the differences in the bobbins/flatwork, they look about the same to me. Both are what I'd call "tall" Tele neck pickups.

Twisted Tele - tall, CS, fiber bobbins, A5, Formvar, 5.9k (listed spec), guessing 42awg

Yosemite - tall, 1-piece 771228 plastic, A5, Formvar, 7.3k (listed spec), guessing 42awg
Measured DCR readings: 5.9, 6.07, 6.09, 6.12, 6.12 (not even close to the 7.3k listed spec, but VERY close to the TT spec)

I guess the covers for these things come out of the same box.

Many people like the TT, the Yose doesn't seem as popular. I have a Yose, but am not into it enough to solder it in. I haven't played a TT, but can't imagine it sounding much different than the Yose (unless tone is in the flatwork).

Has anybody tried both? And what's the deal with the extra height if they're only going to put 6k of wire on it? Maybe the magic lies in the tall, skinny coil.

I have no experience with Yosemite, but have TT in two of my teles. I like their sound, it's brighter and thinner than most tele neck pickups. They tried to make it as similar to strat neck PU as it gets, that's what Fender says. Hence the taller geometry. They also used the same wire gauge as in strat pickups (can't remember the number though).
I think the geometry can modify the sound, especially that they can wind the wire to adjust the pickup inductance and capacitance.
All that said, it's always best to try, doesn't cost much as you already have the Yosemite.

This. The electromagnetic field created by the pickup does indeed reflect the pickup shape (among other things). Those that create a narrow field tend to be clearer, responding to a smaller section of string, while the pickups creating a wider field tend to be warmer and less biting, but also less clear. None are better or worse -- just personal preference. A lot of us enjoy both types.

It looks to me like the TT and Yose will have about the same geometry since they have about the same amount of the same wire with about the same coil height. The doughnut hole part of the coil is probably bigger on the Yose, but not much.

Say it, twisted tele,Yosemite, twisted tele, Yosemite, twisted tele, Yosemite. No they do not sound similar.
Review the title and repeat, Twisted Tele neck, Yosemite neck, Twisted Tele neck, Yosemite neck, Twisted Tele neck, Yosemite neck.

The Player Series neck pickup also has a tall coil, but it sounds nothing like a Twisted Tele. It does have a tremendous amount on internal capacitance (somewhere between 300-400pf), though, which might be the cause of the difference.

Fender specs the Player neck as 8-8.6k, and I did measure one which read 8.7k. That's a different animal. From what I've seen online those have a green cover ground, and use the same 771228 bobbin as the Yosemite, but with "277" handwritten on the bottom.

I measured the DC of my TTs, they are 5.7k and 5.9k. There's another thing though: Fender says they made the TT cover from another alloy (nickel silver? can't remember the alloy name) to minimize treble loss, this may contribute to the brighter sound too.

I think I read somewhere that the covers have been nickel/silver for a long time. Might be some exceptions.

My Fender 50s modified telecaster has a twisted tele neck and I love it. That's about all I use. I really want another guitar but this is so good I can't justify it.

Using YouTube, I never liked the Yosemite sound, but I hate the player series sound also.
