Turkey is just "OK" for me...I'd much rather have a good Smithfield Ham....or even a Honey Baked Ham.

But I do love leftover turkey for sandwiches...weird huh?

I voted turkey because that’s what we’re having this year. But we like ham and turkey, sometimes we will have one for Thanksgiving and the other for Christmas. Personally I like the unsliced half hams, pink looking sugar cured Smithfield. We make sure to check the label and cook them thoroughly, since they are usually just “cured” and not fully cooked yet.

I’ll tolerate the spiral sliced hams. They are fully cooked already and are best just heated to temperature, not cooked [again] too long. Otherwise they will start to dry out.

I grew up when many foods were recommended to be cooked well done, and mama cooked them that way. Pork of almost any type still tastes texturally better to me when cooked well done.

Yep. Turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving and a Ham for Christmas. The rest of the meal is up to you.

Here in the states we celebrate Thanksgiving this coming Thursday with a day off of work, lots of food, football and family.

So the menu has been decided for our Holiday festivities.
The kids decided on Ham as the main entre (even though I was a dissenting voter who wanted Turkey). So an 8 pounder is going into the smoker Wednesday night to be ready Thursday afternoon.
Sides will be homemade mac N cheese, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, fried green beans with bacon, home made hot rolls, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, corn bread stuffing, and cranberry sauce from the can (I just love that stuff).

I am considering throwing the turkey into the smoker after the ham for a Friday afternoon feast.

so are you a Turkey or Ham guy?
I prefer turkey and all of the traditional sides on Thanksgiving.

Smoking a large pork loin to take to our son's inlaws, and a rack of baby-back ribs for Mama and me (there's usually nothing left of the pork loin to bring home). Smoking a turkey and small pork loin for Christmas.

If you love turkey and all the trimming, more power to you. It's just not my thing. For years, my mother-in-law would make that kind of Thanksgiving meal and prod me to take more turkey, stuffing, etc... The best approach for me was to push it around on my plate then dump the plate in the garbage when no one was paying attention.

I just don't get the whole tradition thing.

There’s not a vegetarian vote option, so I guess that leaves me out.

Plus I live in London now and trying to get one of “American” Thanksgivings offered here is a disaster, even when I did eat meat. Every year I’d go to the ads for a different restaurant, confirm that it would be turkey with stuffing, mash potatoes, and pumpkin pie for dessert.

Then get there and be served cod, rice, and a chocolate chip cookie.
