Turkey or Ham?

Here in the states we celebrate Thanksgiving this coming Thursday with a day off of work, lots of food, football and family.

So the menu has been decided for our Holiday festivities.
The kids decided on Ham as the main entre (even though I was a dissenting voter who wanted Turkey). So an 8 pounder is going into the smoker Wednesday night to be ready Thursday afternoon.
Sides will be homemade mac N cheese, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, fried green beans with bacon, home made hot rolls, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, corn bread stuffing, and cranberry sauce from the can (I just love that stuff).

I am considering throwing the turkey into the smoker after the ham for a Friday afternoon feast.

This year I'm doing smoked turkey legs and a small ham.

I like both, but in years where we have a smaller table to feed turkey takes priority.

Ham is fine, but leftover turkey sandwiches are a November delicacy.

I voted "ham" even though I do eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day. I just like ham better.

Neither. My families tradition is to make curries. Thanksgiving was the second Monday in October, and we planked a salmon, too, for you animal protein lovers

I fry chicken. One year I asked my family (wife, kids) and nobody wanted turkey but my mom was coming and she’d be appalled. So I made a small turkey and she took a few bites and ate chicken. Now it’s fried chicken all the way. By Tuesday night it will be soaking in buttermilk and hot sauce. It will be golden delicious. It won’t be dry and chewy like your turkey. So long, suckers.

Used to be Big turkey with homemade stuffing cooked low n slow 'till it falls off the bone, Mashed taters with homemade gravy,corn, hot biscuits, cranberry sauce etc.
This year just me and Mom, small ham with mashed taters w/ brown butter and some vegetables.
I agree, leftover turkey sandwiches with swiss and mayo are in a world all their own.

We thought everyone in our family was going to be out of town for Thanksgiving, however, the daughter called and said she wanted to have Thanksgiving at her house. Momma will make some pies to take, and I'm sure we'll have a good time. My son in law loves football has a large tv, and we'll watch the game! I don't know what my daughter will be serving, but she's a very good cook, and I always like whatever she comes up with.

I miss the old days when we would have the whole family over. Momma would cook a turkey, a ham, and a standing rib roast on rock salt! We would have a huge gang there. She finally decided to pass the baton, and now she no longer goes all out.

Sorry, PR is for Xmas dinner...at least here.

In retirement here, we trade out T-Day @ ex-sis-in-law's for Xmas dinner @ our place. Ex-sis married a guy who is very picky and now diabetic. He won't eat anything green or beans of any kind. So, she uses the occasion to cook all her favorites...which we take home afterwards. Win-win.

Turkey, not really a big fan of baked ham but the spiral cuts are pretty good.

Neither. We used to buy a traditional, pre-made Thanksgiving dinner from a local grocery store. Heat and eat - easy, and only took about an hour or two to heat the turkey.

After one serving of turkey, the rest of the family would all say "I've had enough turkey - I don't like it that much." This would leave me with pounds of leftover turkey to either eat or throw away.

About 15 years ago, we started making other proteins - salmon, meat loaf, or steaks on the grill. That was good!

5 years ago, we started going to a Thanksgiving buffet at a local party center. Turkey, prime rib, pork, chicken, fish, and all the sides you want. No prep, no clean up. It is worth every penny!
