The Duo Sonic thread got me thinking: "Has anyone ever tuned up a short scale or a travel guitar?" I mean standard tuning, but up a half or a whole step; maybe more. What are the limits? Can the truss rod take it? What's the role of the string gauge in this scenario?

You can see the effects using a string tension calculator. Stringjoy has one. D’Addario did but it may be getting redone. It will show you total tension. You can look at your standard set on a long scale then compare. Three half steps should be no problem With string gauge changes. A mini strat, as an example, could probably go up to A with light strings.
