Guitar body and neck on the way and am looking for Tru-Oil. What kind and where can I pick it up? I'm not having any luck searching Ace Hardware or Home Depot sites. Is there a forum sponsor who sells it? Any chain stores carry it?

Appreciate it ;)

Hi PixelMover, any walmart, sporting goods department has it in a small bottle ( 3 oz ). Good luck with your project.

Since you probably won't find any firearms related businesses in your area you might try midwayusa.com. I hope the state hasn't blocked this site for you.

All my necks are finished this way.

I use the 5 dollar bottle of Birchwood Casey Gunstock Oil.

Put a small amount on a towel and use your fingers to rub a thin EVEN layer all over the neck and fretboard. Then let it set for 3-4 hours or overnight. Sand it down with a grey 000 wool pad. Then apply another coat, and repeat about 3-4 more times.

Then put your decal on the headstock and wax that bad boy up!

I couldn't find it at Walmart. They said they were going to stop carrying it. I found it at the "Academy Outdoors & Sports" store.

Nice flashback, good instructions -- was wonderin' how I was going to do the fretboard. Is the 000 pad good enough to get the oil off the fret wire inbetween coats or you find yourself having to mask off the fretboard and scrub the frets once you are done?

I taped off the frets. VERY CAREFULLY. I dont have inlays on my boards so no need for masking dots. Coated the WHOLE thing in the tru-oil coating.

Best feeling neck I own.

I dont know about rosewood and such, cause I never use them anyway!

anyone on this thread use Tru-Oil for the body? I've been working on this for the last couple weeks, and I can't seem to ever get the finish perfectly smooth, there is always some specks of dust, or bumps, or whatever and I have to really scrub it off, so it is taking forever to build up any significant coating. Any suggestions? I am applying with my fingers, then wiping excess with a (hopefully) lint free cloth as I've seen recommended. Should I try a different method? If I just use my fingers to spread, and not wipe off excess, will the tru-oil level itself? Any suggestions would help!

To much work for a body IMO.

My current body has a reranch blonde finish with a easy to spray satin clear coat. DONE.

I am not to into difficult finishes right now. I beat my gear to hard to spend 3 weeks painting a high gloss finish and wet sanding for me to go punish it live with a belt buckle raping, sweat, whiskey, beer, smoke, grime, and other assorted body fluids.

Maybe when I start getting some nicer gigs.

Tru-Oil is easy as hell and I believe Music Man uses the very same finish as I do on their necks as well.
