About 15 years ago, I applied too few coats of Tru oil so I added more coats recently.

Neck: 12 Coats
Front: 20 Coats
Back: 15 Coats

Here's what I did...

Prepare:
Sand down existing finish with 300 grit.
Wipe off excess dust.

First 10 Coats:
Apply thin coats of tru oil.
Wipe off excess with paper towel.
Allow 2 - 4 hours to dry between coats.
Sand gently with 600 grit.

Last 5 Coats:
Apply thin coats of tru oil.
Wipe off excess with paper towel.
Allow 2 - 4 hours to dry between coats.
Wet sand gently with 1,000 grit.

Last Coat:
Apply a thin coat of tru oil.
Wipe off excess with paper towel.
Wait 2 - 4 days.
Wet sand gently with 1,000 grit.

Cure:
Wait 2 - 4 weeks for it to be fully cured.

I didn't come up with this process, I got it from a luthier.

I did 6 coats of Truoil on a PRS Maple neck, waited 24 hours between coats and 2 weeks to cure. Rubbed it with some coarse wooly cloth I had. Came out great, smooth satin.
