One of my favorite records so far this year is An Overview on Phenomenal Nature by Cassandra Jenkins. I've been thinking a lot about the fuzz sound that comes in at about 1:30 on this song.

On a whim, I sent an Instagram message to the song's producer saying I loved the tone and wanted to know which pedal they used. He got back to me, and I was surprised by the answer.

Any guesses? Later today, I'll tell you what he told me.

I'm thinking some sort of synth, because there are movements in that sound that aren't consistent with playing a guitar.

?? Don't take it the wrong way, something really accessible, like an app? It sounds great. But it doesn't sound unobtanium to me. I like it. And cool song, BTW. And made me hug my dog.

Just played that song and my daughter loved it.

I think Wally is on the right track with a Muff type, so I'll just go vague and say that.

Well, it might be a baritone kazoo played through a mic and diddled by a Modern digital appliance?????.

I have no clue, but I think this might be the answer. Also, the mic preamp may be overdriven.

I'm incorrigible. Sorry. The main thought was: I wanted to present the question as it appeared to me first.

Anyway: here's what the guy told me:

    "It's my Guild s-90 into a dimed Neve 1073."

I was pretty surprised that it wasn't a pedal at all (my thought was maybe a Russian Big Muff). Congrats to those of you who knew it was straight into the board!

If you want that effect, the JHS Color Box is based on that preamp.

I had that thought also; and the JHS Crayon is half the pedal (without XLR inputs or as much eq) for half the price. Both of those pedals are now much higher on my radar.

Well, no matter which model Neve 1073????? it was, it is the most expensive fuzz box ever built!! If you want that sound and don’t have the bucks or the studio with a Neve preamp there, a Big Muff will get it done. Or....a good high gain tube amp won’t need any outboard device.

Back in my expanded neighborhood when I was a young fellow, there was a BIG three-legged dog. He had his gang that roamed with him, and he ruled!!!
