I saw S.G. Goodman at the Burl in Lexington a couple months ago for $20. $7 for some delicious spicy noodles and drink prices reasonable. More importantly, got to hear some excellent brand new music, not 40-50 year old classics.

Change your sights.

The very few times I go to a club, I refuse to pay even a cover charge for a local band; most clubs in my area have done away with cover charges, and with good reason...the bands in my area bore me to tears...nothing but Skynyrd & Allmans, & SO sick of southern rock. I actually play in the 2 best bands in the area, and sometimes can't wait till the gig is over.
Tribute bands? No thanx. Even if they're free.

I watch a lot of tribute bands at a local theatre these are one of my favorites !

I subbed as Paul in my friends‘ Beatles tribute a few weeks ago. It paid well and I certainly love playing Paul’s bass lines and know all the lyrics. They really do it right: wigs, suits, all the right gear down to period correct mic stands. I have done plenty of Beatles covers over the years, but that’s different than putting on a wig. I felt like a dork in the dressing room, but honestly it was really fun once we started playing. The audience just looked so happy.

I still quote seeing Cheap Trick in the early 80s for $8. That is probably, what, $24, $32 in today's dollars? Yes, that was when tours were cheap and album sales earned the band's money, but still.

I stumbled into the local college bar in 1978 and for my $2 cover, I suddenly found myself within spitting distance of Cheap Trick. College was in Bloomington, IL, and Cheap Trick was a band from Rockford back then. They were amazing. Also saw BB King and John Lee Hooker for $2.50 student ticket price the same year. And Zappa did two back-to-back shows (with different material) that I saw for $6 each show. I had a chance to see the Blues Brothers for free back in college, but stupidly turned it down (I still regret that).

The last live show we went to was Bonnie Raitt a few years ago, and I thought the $70 ticket price was outrageous. But it was an outdoor summer gig and pretty magical, so I guess we got what we paid for.
