My wife and I were looking at acts coming to venues around us. We found a few acts we would consider seeing, but OMG the prices!

Cheap Trick, MGM Casino, $289 each ticket, then ticketbastard fees (33% - 40%) would push this to about $400 each ticket, add in dinner on our way, one drink for each at the show, and this is a $900 evening.

John Melloncamp, Goo Goo Dolls. $200-ish, $280 with fees, parking dinner and drinks, and we are in the $650 ballpark for the two of us.

We could skip drinks, but that is only saving $15 or $20. We have one drink at the show, rarely do either of us have a second.

OMG. That is waaaaaaaay too much money for a single night out. We have money, but $900 for Cheap Trick? I like them, but not $900 worth. I am not sure who I would go see for almost a grand. Maybe if Led Zeppelin toured? Maybe? This is another reason I don't go with my wife to Rolling Stones shows - that would be north of a $1500 night, plus travel expenses.

But will we ever go to another live show?

Well, we looked at some local theaters. Saturday night, my wife, daughter, and I went to see "Out Of The Blue", a local ELO tribute band. Tickets were $20 each, so three tickets with fees was $86. It was at the Goodyear theater - 1100 seats on the floor, 500 in the balcony. Very nice, updated theater. Dinner was $70 for three of us, so the night out for three and a drink each was $170. Two of us would have only been $115. The band was good, and we had a great night.

There have been threads here about "Why does anyone see / care about / play in / etc. a tribute band?" This is why. Cheap Trick - $900 a night out for two. A decent Cheap Trick tribute - $115 a night out for two.

I am starting not to care if I never see original artists again. I think "the monopoly" is starting to price themselves out of the market. The boomers and older Gen-X crowd won't be paying those prices for that much longer.

There aren't many bands from that era I would care to see at any price. And I'm a boomer. But seeing some of these guys playing the same old [email protected] they've been playing for 50 years doesn't interest me in the least.

Up until recently, the only performer I would consider would have been Jeff Beck.

The last time I saw him was with ZZ Top and I was thinking I didn't care to see them, but their schtick, and almost self parody made them tolerable.

My wife and I are going to our first concert in ages. Lake Street Dive this Friday in Saint Paul. Two tickets with fees ran just under $200. The venue is +/- a mile from our house, so we'll probably take an Uber. Another couple we know has tickets as well, so we'll probably meet up beforehand for dinner/drinks. Not a cheap night out, but not as exorbitant as the some of the examples the OP listed!

Went to see "Rain", a Beatles tribute band and tix were like $45, great seats, and they were tops.
Went thru most of the Beatles body of work and was so impressed saw them again 2 years later.
The band wore the collarless suits of the 63-64 Beatles, the Sgt. Pepper gear, it was great.
Besides, you can't see a real "Beatles" concert and Sir McCartney is charging way to much for
his concerts.

Some tribute bands aren’t cheap. I went and saw The Musical Box, who cover Gabriel-era Genesis. Tickets were CDN$120 and the 1000 seat theatre was sold out.

This is what scares me - when the original acts are priced out of the market, will the better tribute prices go up to fill in the gap?

When I left Rain, I felt like I had just seen the Beatles.

I think tribute bands are a waste of talent. Tribute bands and marvel universe/ comic book based movies are a sign people are losing the ability to create, especially create something new.
No band that inspires tribute bands were ever in a tribute band. They created their own sound and scene. The difference between $200 and $20 is the difference between original and imitation.
It is a shame so many of the originals are trying to pilfer fans to fill their coffers today though. I guess that is another reason DJ's are so popular.

I love a good tribute act. It's especially awesome when it's a tribute to someone you can't see anymore, like Zeppelin or the Beatles, or someone who doesn't tour in your area. I used to work at a concert venue, and got to see some amazing tribute bands. Some played the songs and sounded like the artist, like Get the Led Out, some did the whole costume thing and did it that way, like Rain. But they were all great, doing what they loved, paying tribute to the artists and music they loved, and their love of that music showed through, and made it a fun time.

I don't care at all about seeing super stars. Living in Las Vegas I much prefer the bar scene and the local bands. There are so many great ones here. The experience is up close, personal and you can enjoy downing a few beers with friends in comfort.

The shows we've gone to in the past year are way more reasonable.

Gogol Bordello, New Year's Eve, Brooklyn Bowl Williamsburg: $35/ticket
Ministry/Melvins/Corrosion of Conformity, Paramount LI: $45/ticket
Frank Turner & Sleeping Souls, Knockdown Center, Queens: $45/ticket
Biffy Clyro, Irving Plaza NYC: $45/ticket for 'VIP' seating
Los Lobos, City Winery NYC: $50/ticket

We did see Rammstein at Met Life Stadium and those tickets were pretty expensive (almost $200 per) - but the show was worth every penny.

We saw Cheap Trick last year, and I think the tickets were $60 each, balcony seating. But I think I'm done seeing them, since Rick hasn't been touring with them due to health issues (and Tom Peterson was out before that). Both spots were filled in by Robin Zander's son, and while he did a good job the time we saw him (on bass), I'm not really interested in anything other than Rick and Tom on stage.

We actually went and saw a Bowie tribute a couple of weeks ago, and those tickets were $65 each! So tribute band prices are inching up as well.

If you like Rush, check out YYNOT. They are not a 100% tribute band since they have 2 or 3 original albums (which are awesome). But their RUSH covers are as good as it gets. Their originals sound a lot like Rush if you ask me. The tickets are $20 to $35. You can check them out on YouTube. They have changed drummers and lead singers but all musicians are top notch. I play guitar and drums and they are spot on to the originals. And the bass player (to my ears) is absolutely amazing. If Rush ever wanted to tour again (they don't), and needed a new drummer, the one in this band would have no problems covering it (RIP Neil Peart). As far as main stream bands, there's no way I would ever pay the ridiculous prices. Anything over $50, I'll pass.
