How do you test out a tremolo effect?

When you, as a right-thinking guitar player who treasures Tremolo above all other effects, are trying an amp/effect pedal's tremolo, what do you play?

Exercise that Franchise and vote above, fool!

I play an arrangement of suzie Q that sort of weaves in and out of Burton's and CCR's versions.

I immediately thought of "Born On The Bayou" before I even looked at the poll.

So I voted for that. :D

I don’t have a go-to. But I make sure I hit huge, open, first position chords on the edge of breakup. Because it’s imperative to me that it sounds good like that. And if it sounds good like that, it’ll sound good on anything.

I also turn it on and off several times until I convince myself that either there is no volume loss, or it’s a very slight boost. Either of those I can handle. But if the volume drops, it’s not useable for me.

The song doesn't matter. The sound matters. So I test them by plugging 'em in and playing guitar through 'em. (Of course!)

I've been through several. None of the onboard trems I've had has sounded good. Too much TSS-TSS-TSS. So I finally resorted to pedals. But it turned out that they usually sound terrible, too.

The only one I like is Demeter's Tremulator, a.k.a. the Cooder trem.

I'd love to try an old DeArmond 601, but they're way past my pay grade.

My 16yo nephew visited. He's a bit of a shredder. I set my gear up for him to have a bit of a play, he plugs in, stomps on some dirt pedals and starts flaying away. Then he stops and asks what that white pedal is. "Tremolo" i tell him, he stomps on it and resumes shredding at 65 notes per second. Ah, young people....

Is that DeArmond one of the older units with the rotating drum filled with “mystery” fluid?

At the moment our band plays Riders on the Storm and For What It's Worth. DRRI tremolo, no testing needed.
