I'm thinking of doing a 6v6 conversion to a Blues JR. I know an output transformer upgrade is recommended but will I really notice if I'm barely pushing the amp. Hearing damage dictates that amp volume be limited but i want the bigger rounder low end of the 6v6.

Fwiw, the circuit will dictate what the power tubes do. That is, the change from EL-84's to 6V6's may not be as much of a sonic change as you are expecting. And....usually, an OT that will handle EL-84's will work well with 6V6's.

IMO - EL84 to 6V6 won't give you much of a difference in tone... and any difference you would notice would be at higher volumes, not lower volumes. As for OT, I am pretty sure the tubes are similar enough in impedance and power that an OT upgrade won't be for the tubes sake...

EDIT: Wally beat me to it!

The least of your concerns is changing the OT.
