Hold the phone, Chuck. You're saying a magnet next to another magnet will change its magnetism? What happens with pickups that have more than one magnet in them? Should I dismantle them all when not in use?

If I were in your shoes I’d check to see if there was a hidden pickup

But what about all of the marketing about the field being tuned on each magnet to some very specific gauss level by the manufacturer as to produce a very particular tone?

I guess if that's important to someone, then you send it to the manufacturer.

But I'm going to guess that a normally charged alnico magnet will work fine for most, and if you really want you can degauss the magnet buy flipping it, then running it past the neodymium magnets again.

The store that I go to has them stacked on a rack, on on top of another, side by side. They could be there for months. Also, when you think about it, I’m sure they get shipped out from the factory in a box with a few dozen inside.
I think you are worrying too much about this.

If you are that worried about them, I will be happy to test a set of Filter Tron style pickups in a semi-hollow if you have any, that I need a pickup change for. And I will test them for years to test the longevity of the magnet strength.

My local guitar shop keeps Seymour Duncans in their plastic boxes next to each other.

If someone came in there screaming, they should not only call the cops, but the psychiatry ward as well.

Well it's true that the maker may calibrate a specific gauss strength to tailor the pickups overall character.
I've never heard of magnetizing each magnet to a different strength in the same pickup, but it's common enough to use A5 for the wound and A2 for the plan strings or something like that.

I had some week sweet overly delicate sounding vintage Mustang pickups remagnetized by a shop in maybe 1990, before neo magnets were a thing, and when I got them back they were more powerful but also harsh and shrill, really pretty bad.

As far as accidental demagnetization of pickup magnets by storing them close to other magnets, my sense is that they are fine together if stacked N to S as they attract, and I've been keeping pickups this way for decades.
I've read that this is terrible, but I just don't have bad results in my uses.

As far as why those old Mustang pickups sounded weak and delicate, it seems tome that an old Mustang pickup compared to an old Strat pickup, the Mustang pickups always sounds weak and delicate.
They are usually wound weaker, but I've had both around 5.7k and the Mustangs still sounded weaker.
Made me wonder if the old ones got a different alnico formula?
I can't confirm that but the magnets look and sound different.

maybe try reading some work of Bill Lawrence

and i don't know who wrote it here, but a magnet can only max of magnetisme
so if a pup would have problems with magnet strenght you recharge it again and are done.

you will not have a problem, only if the misses would have hunted a bug and tried to hit it with the bag.

I keep all the pickups I've removed/swapped in a good sized drawer. They're not right on top of each other, but every once in awhile I wonder if I should separate them more. I think they're ok, but the multiplying pedals in the other drawers, I think they're getting together when I'm not around!

For the low price of an initial consult, you should retain every divorce firm in the city. Then you can just use the cheap one. Money well spent.

Wait, what are we talking about?

A wife is worth more than a pile of guitar parts that aren't in use.

Sell the parts, buy a guitar, and treat her to dinner.

Turning on the lights in the middle of the night I swear I’ve seen patch cords writhing together on the floor.
