total irrelevance is actually relevant... so, not to hurt your feelings, but I think you are 'mostly' irrelevant... you'd have to be more relevant to be 'totally' irrelevant.

    make sense?

JL_LI - you know I love you like a brother... but you sound like a guy who needs a vacation!

you need to let go of all that. Maybe stay home for a week or two, take a local community-college course in "how to screw in light bulbs".

A life of irrelevance is quite likely much closer to the 'imitation of Cxxxx' (sorry, can't talk about that here, except on the forum for church-music) than a life of incessant work.

everybody has to examine his/her own relation to the universe. If letting go is hard, you might want to examine that, in terms of your relation to the universe. The universe expects very little of you, and will not be disappointed if you take some time for yourself.

What does making sense have to do with it?

By definition, if I'm merely 99.9% irrelevant, then I'm not irrelevant. Like being rather unique, or kinda pregnant.

Being a lot closer to 60 than I am to 50 means I am not only invisible but also irrelevant. But at this stage in my journey I'm completely comfortable with that.

    I'm 10 years closer to 60 than to 50.

I wonder when he picked up his wired messages. It’s been many years since I watched Paladin, but I don’t recall ever seeing him near San Francisco.

Let me ask my wife. She is known to be more relevant than I. Wouldn't partial relevance be almost as good?

mmmmm, no, because they you start to have value and that is problematic.

complete absence of relevance has value because it is that 0 value that makes you actually useful and a little bit relevant. Mostly irrelevant is like the very last couple of drops of syrup in a bottle. Not enough to use if you can find another bottle, but not empty so no call to action to clear it out. You last a really long time in that spot without causing any difficulty.

    Value is separate from relevance

My wife and I are sweating bullets right now wondering if I have cancer and going through all the tests and I'm on disability. I just turned 60 and I only play original music which is my main driving interest besides family and I'm on steroids right now getting bucket list stuff done for the last month or so while the steroids work.
Relevance and legacy are key terms in my life right now but I still have a sense of humor so regardless of what befalls...I say KAK! Rock-on while you can and try to be kind to each other and live in the moment with those that you love and appreciate all that is bestowed upon you. Give it all that you have and you'll not have ANY regrets about relevance.

Family is the soft spot in the "we are all irrelevant" argument.

Edit: regrets were mentioned. I have very few, I'm happy to say.

That is the most relevant thing I've read in ages, @lowatter. Thank you. I pray that you are not finished as soon as you fear. Many of us get into the habit of putting off doing the things that matter, while doing "what we must", and it takes a major upheaval to give us perspective. If I'm smart, I'll remember what you've said and do something worthwhile, and soon.

Seems like this medical situation has really sharpened your thoughts. This is when you see things, IMO, as they really are. I wish you the very best, fighting off this monster but one thing is clear - you're making more of every moment than most of us are. And so, in a way we are all envious of you for that.

The other day, by my house in New Orleans I looked up and saw a pair of Mississippi Kites, right there in one of my tall cypress trees. Courting, and making the coolest sounds. A "dove gray" that doves wish they had. The color of beautiful clouds, not concrete. And they remained in the roost and around it for almost a whole hour. I couldn't take my eyes off them. The best 50 minutes I've had in a long time.

Dr. Thought, you’ve revealed yourself as the forum intellectual. I didn’t realize how important a question you asked until I saw the replies start pouring in. You have a gift for keeping the discussion moving forward. I wish I’d have had the opportunity to take a class from you. Back in high school I’d probably not have taken the same lessons from it. You’ve proven your relevance, at least to the forum.
