I have on hand a tortoise, black humbucker and white that is already mounted. Was going to put tortoise on the car telecaster with the pickup on it and the black humbucker one on the natural ash telecaster.
Gonna get a couple sets of new strings, break out the tools and swap pickguards and pickups around. Gonna put the Tex-Mex's and Tort pickguard on my CAR Fender/Squier partscaster (#1) and put the black pickguard with a humbucker on the FSR ash tele.
Good move. I like black on CAR, but it looks even better on ash. Next best thing on CAR is tort, so there you go. (For the record, I have never liked mint green, cream, or white on red. JOMHO.)
I think it works surprisingly well. But CAR is often a bit darker than we think, and tortoise shell comes in quite a few variants. I have a darkish CAR (no where near as bright as the one above). It has a fat tele GFS tortoise shell pickguard on it, which is quite brown. The brown and deepish red work surprisingly well together, along with the rosewood neck. It looks unusual and rather classy. But very different to the one above.
As long as it's brown instead of red tortoise shell. I also think it looks better on a non-metallic paint like feista red. Sorry jwj4856 but that isn't at all to my tastes.
