I heard this song "Mad" by Dave Dudley. One of lines talks about drinking and going home tore up like a can of kraut. I wonder how many people today knows what a can of kraut is?

I know I like the German style fermented Kraut that Aldis sells in a jar much better than the canned American style kraut. I married me a German gal of course I know what Kraut is

    The greater question is:

why does a can of kraut serve as an adequate example of being "tore up"?

Maybe they were "tore up" when they wrote that line.

Funny you should ask. Mr. Dudley's original line was: "Tore up like a college rejection letter." But his manager advised him to re-think the reference.

    Shredded.
    Like a head of cabbage.

    Fermented.
    In a jar of vinegar.

I don't eat canned kraut anymore.

That last one, really tore me up. I like my cole crops, lightly steamed or fresh.

Herr Thorne, my instructor in High School, suggested I might be the best student in German he had ever had. But then I realized how much I hated German cooking. I lost momentum after that.

There’s a line in a Kirchen song, “buzzin’ like a cheap TV”.

I grew up around a lot of people who made their own ‘kraut in big ceramic crocks down in their basements. Cabbage is a pretty common crop where I’m from. You see huge fields of it.

I still eat a fair amount of the stuff. Especially on hot dogs, with mustard, cream cheese, and chopped onion. But in proper dishes, too.

We know what it is around here, there’s some German on both mine and my wife’s side. Brats and kraut, mmm, mmm, now I’m getting hungry!

I like what my mother always referred to as "sour kraut", although we rarely had it. I'm gonna check out Aldi's jar stuff. They're a German company, right? They should know their Kraut! ;)
