I like Heart on a hits basis. Great r'n'r, but I never felt they had a complete solid album.
Lots of greats already mentioned; I’d add a couple bonafide punk classics:
X-Ray Spex-Germ Free Adolescents
In no particular order, here's a few that come to mind:
Joni (all of them!...OK, ok, Hissing of Summer Lawns or Hegira)
Ricki Lee Jones- Ricki Lee Jones, Traffic From Paradise
Beth Orton- Trailer Park
Patty Griffin- Living With Ghosts
Emmylou Harris- Wrecking Ball/Spyboy (Studio version/live version)
Shawn Colvin- A Few Small Repairs, Fat City
Alanis Morrisette-Jagged Little Pill
That's a great list. I prefer the earlier Lucinda Williams album on Rough Trade. And I will add a couple others to the excellent list by northernguitar.
k.d. lang - Absolute Torch and Twang
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom
Tedeschi-Trucks Band - Revelator
Bonnie Raitt - Luck of the Draw
Sarah McLachlan, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
Surprised Sheryl Crow hasn't shown up yet.
Funny - I was thinking about the fact that nobody ever starts a thread "Top Ten Albums by Male Artists" so in a sense this thread is an excellent illustration of the sexism that is still endemic in our society.
Given that, off the top of my head (in no particular order):
Pretenders - eponymous
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
Brandi Carlyle - Give up the Ghost
Pretenders - Learning to Crawl
The Go-Gos - Beauty and the Beat
The (Dixie) Chicks - Taking the Long Way
Carole King - Tapestry
The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go
Dolly Parton - The Best of Dolly Parton
Leslie Gore - I'll Cry if I Want to
Found a copy of Mary's Danish at a thrift a few years back - it's a great record.
Some great ones already mentioned. Pretenders. Sleater Kinney. Heart. Each have had several records that could be listed here.
Some others. No particular order. Off the top...
St. Vincent - strange mercy
St. Vincent - self-titled
Alanis - Jagged Little Pill
The Staves - dead and born and grown
Shakira - Laundry Service
Bonnie Raitt - Nick Of Time, Luck Of The Draw
kd lang (she was once lower case, maybe not now) - Ingenue
Jann Arden - Living Under June
Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde) - Eponymous
Shawn Colvin - Fat City, A Few Small Repairs
Maryann Price - Etched In Swing
Asleep At The Wheel (Chris O'Connell) - Pasture Prime
Ricki Lee Jones - debut album
I’m a massive Kate Bush fan as in bootlegs and all. And Joni but I’m gonna add some that aren’t already listed here:
I’d add Courtney Barnett - A Sea of Split Peas is as good a songwriter’s album as any in the last decade.
Kate Bush “50 Words for Snow” is one of the best this decade for me, anyway. If you listen to Among Angels and don’t cry you’re just an animal.
Chrissie Hynde and Valve Bone Woe!
Suzi Quatro self titled.
Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
My post, my pick! So I’m adding Pylon - Chomp. Not a solo act but Vanessa Briscoe unintentionally changed music.
Sorry. But...Patrice Rushen - Straight from the Heart.
And speaking of Heart! Dreamboat Annie.
Blondie self titled. Or Sex Offender Live.
The hollywood celebrity gossip machine got every last cent it could out of her troubles. I went along for the ride too.
Since I'm the president of the Dori Freeman fan club in Texas (self-appointed!) I'll nominate her first album into this illustrious gathering.
"In late 2014, she sent a Facebook message to Teddy Thompson (son of Richard Thompson) who liked her music so much he decided to produce her album. Thompson says that it took him "maybe 10 to 12 seconds to realize she's great" and he was struck by her "straight-to-the-heart delivery." The album was funded through Kickstarter and released by Free Dirt Records on February 5, 2016. (Wikipedia)
And Denton Texas native Sara Jaffe has got some good songs.
Not the best, but on my playlist:
I Am Shelby Lynne
Dusty In Memphis
Tracy Nelson Country
Punisher - Phoebe Bridgers
Mary Wells Greatest Hits
My New Celebrity Is You - Blossom Dearie
Horses - Patti Smith
I don’t know about “best” or “top ten”, so I’ll just name ten I think are fantastic.
Cate Le Bon - Mug Museum
Hospitality - self titled
Helium - The Dirt of Luck
Carla Bozulich - Red Headed Stranger
St. Vincent - Marry Me
Betty Davis - They Say I’m Different
Big Thief - Masterpiece
Holly Golightly - Truly She Is None Other
