I was curious, what types of technology or approaches do you use to get your tone?

    My example:
    1. Strictly a home
    2. Play at conversation levels or headphones most days
    3. Needs to be reasonable in cost.
So here is how i use technology to get the sounds I've gotten over the years.
    1. My hands make me sound like me, unfortunately.
    2. A standard stock vintage style tele suits me ears and hands best (mij 62 custom reissue)
    3. Slightly trick wiring (bill lawrence 5 way switch)
    4. No tone control
    5. Zoon g3xn to emulate the sounds i like (some basic drives, tape echo, and the odd pedal to play along to a specific song)
    6. Into a ART use mixer as an interface
    7. The Tonelib gfx software in my low end pc to emulate a Vox ac-15 plugged into a bright ac-30 impulse response with a bit of room reverb added on)
It make me happy. Is it purist, far from it. Is it pratical, for me it is.

    What is your tone story?

If I can't get it there, I can't get it anywhere.

That’s it for me to. Occasionally I play with one of the many pedals I’ve built or bought.

I developed a system that allows me to practice alone or along with a turntable, CD, laptop. The primary amplification and effects are aquired with a Vox Tone Lab. The output from the Vox is connected to a mixer and then a stereo reciever's "aux" port. This lets me connect either speakers or a headset for monitoring. The CD, turntable, etc, is also connected to the mixer allowing me to play along.
I started puting this system together back when the kids were born, 1979, and I've been updating the various components ever since.

I have an awful lot of 'em, even if they do all sound like me.
For clean I use a clean SC guitar through a clean delay or reverb into a clean amp designed for distortion.
For dirt I use a clean SC guitar through a delay into dirt pedals or a dirty amp.
Which guitar, which pickups, which delays, which dirt pedals, and which dirty amps has been a long search.

Right now I like a Jazzmaster pickup in the bridge position of a hardtail Strat and a hand wired true PTP 30w amp with an AC30 OT, and Orange AD30 power section, and a Tiny Terror preamp section.
Yet another dirt amp with stupendously great cleans.

I gotta say, amps with gizmos stuck in there to reduce distortion just plain suck for clean sounds!

I use a Boss GT10 for almost everything but overdrive for that an OCD. That is my live rig. I am going to start looking at some more modern choices, maybe Helix or Fractal. I set the Boss up for Compressor, delay, Reverb, and EQ. Then I can add the occasional chorus, flange or whatever. The modeling is there if I need it. I don't think they are the best effects but for me they are good enough and simple.

    My working rig these days:

A Danocaster 55 Whiteguard with a Tele Partscaster as backup. I run them into a Mooer GE-300 with their own bank of 4 tones.

1 - Completely clean, no amp model. Compression and a clean boost for solos
2 - Deluxe Reverb model with 50% gain
    3 - Deluxe Reverb with 100% gain
    4 - Marshall Plexi 100 model, 15 - 20% gain
No cab sims, slight spring reverb on all patches

Effects across all patches - Mooer Pure Boost or Tube Drive, medium delay (360ms, 50% feedback), Detune (instead of chorus), slap echo
    Expression pedal 1 - Cry Baby Wah/Volume
Expression pedal 2 - Mix between dry signal and Detune

I run the Mooer into the effects return of my amp (35 watts) into a single 12" cabinet. This rig lets me cover just about all of my band's song list of Classic Rock, Motown, R&B, a few oldies and some newer stuff.

Set the amp to the sweet spot.

Add reverb - what I call the 'chill' reverb at around 2...

Blues Driver, set for about 5.5 (12:30) on the gain - maybe just a little more.

Occasionally - wah, envelope filter or cocked wah

    Slight delay...

then chorus, or flange, or phase...

I can goose it with a boost, a fuzz or a DS-! overdrive.

    And compression...

    Or straight in.

Old technology is still working for me. I'm not really worried about my "home" tone as I'm the only one that hears it but it's usually one of my vintage amps that never leave the house. 60's Western Auto or 67 Epiphone Galaxie.
I play old Country as well as old rock so I use different amps and pedals depending on the genre when I play out with a band.
My country rig is an Ampeg J-20 Jet with a Dynacomp, Timmy, Carbon Copy and a Boss Frv-1 reverb.
My rock rig is a 68 princeton custom, phase 90, SD-1, saucy box, Hf-2 Flanger and either two DD-3's, or a DM-2 and DD-3.
I use Telecasters the most but also Strats depending. I also play lap steel, so either a Lap comes, or I use one of my special recipe Squier strats for slide as my preferred setup tends to be hard on necks.

Yamaha THR10, on the "clean" Bass preset, a little reverb and compression dialed in and I'm SET! Every once in a while, I'll dial in some Chorus. That's it. It IS music to my ears.

And, of course, I ALWAYS sound like me. Characteristic style and tone, I guess - with some variations, of course.

I always PLAY like me. I have quite a range of different sounds.

As for technology (I think you mean gear??), I use a variety of guitars and pedals and my PRRI or my THR10.

My tone pretty much ends up the same no matter what I do. And if it doesn't, no one notices anyway.

I wish I was interested in technology. I mean, it's not like I'm the Ted Kaczynski of tone like RodeoTex up above, but if I have to use a computer, or twist too many knobs, or slap my foot about often, that all interferes with my playin' and beverage drinking.

I know my sound now and I own it, so:

Electric: Strictly Fenderish tube amps with either a reverb pedal into a Gain setting or a modest pedalboard into a Clean setting.
Acoustic: whatever comes out of that soundhole.

    depends on the day

    1 just acoustic
2 Electric not plugged in (I have a particular resonant telecaster that's great for that)
    3 Electric into THR10
4 Electric into helix with headphones with tracks coming into helix via computer usb interface

    Mostly 2 though
