Tone control with a split personality.

    Wiring up 5 lead humbuckers in a T-60 style circuit. Everything works/sounds great, but the bridge tone control acts like a volume control when switched out of phase. How is the capacitor working in phase, but not out of phase? I'm using this diagram from singlecoil.com:
