Why does one have to be better than the other? This isn't football. There are no stats. This is art and expression.

Maybe not. I remember when I was twelve and thought Randy Rhodes was ‘better’ than Jimmy Page. However, I was twelve and got over it.

I’m 100% in agreement that there’s no contest in play or reason to argue that Flea is less good in RHCP etc than Tommy is with SRV etc.

But once we suggest that boomers or whatever generation raised on whatever entertainment have better opinions than millennials raised on reality TV, our whole argument kind of collapses.
    Eh?

I was watching a fundraiser on PBS last night...a live concert of Tower of Power. Whoever that bass player is, he's KILLER!

Wouldn't it be fair to say they're both great and leave it at that?

Did Tommy Shannon tune down to Eb?

    What? I mean, huh?!?

Gen X here, and as you might suspect, I don’t care. I think that music as competition became normalized with all of those ridiculous shows. Maybe millennials feel the same.

Music also now seems disposable. What ‘classics’ will Gen Z turn to in 30 years? Is there anything that memorable or beloved? Daft Punk, maybe? Pharrell Williams?

As a couch bassist, one of my favourite lines is Tommy's Texas Flood.
    An Opus unto itself!

    I love his playing, too.
He is wonderfully unpredictable, but still rock solid.
    He's outstanding in his field!

Donny, you’re out of your element. Flea was Nihilist #2 in The Big Lebowski.

I'd like to see it now... I bought a '66 white jazz bass with matching headstock in a Florida pawnshop ($125, if I remember correctly...)) when I was 15. I wonder if it's the same year.
I still have it; played it on cruise ships, in clubs, for years on the road with the Lemonheads.
    It's cool to see another.

FWIW, it's not a matching painted headstock in the video. Looks like it is at times on that footage because of the blue light that's on them, but it's a regular maple headstock.

The one Hendrix played does look to have been white.

I've never seen a picture of Tommy playing one with a white headstock.

Whatever it was before became a monster with the ‘talent’ tv.
