Flea is much flashier but pick up whatever bass guitar you got laying around and try filling in for SRV vs RHCP... What Shannon did is actually harder believe it or not. Flea just swooped in and played "bass lead" over a funky mix, Shannon was the mix...

Is Flea your gold standard of bass players?

No opinion on Flea, but Tommy has always been one of my favorite bass players. Phenomenal sense of rhythm and timing. Excellent bass fills. Always meshed with SRV & Chris so perfectly he made it seem effortless. Under appreciated in my opinion.

Tommy is one of my top five all time favorite bassists. Flea is not. He’s in the top 20, though.

That said, it’s personal preference. I think you are severely oversimplifying what it is that Flea does, and I don’t think you really understand his importance or contribution if that’s really how you feel about his playing.

Overall though, it’s a weird comparison, to me. Totally apples and oranges. But both groovy AF. I’d love to play with either of them.

Pick up your P-bass and try it. Play along to "pride and joy". Not easy.

Flea is a good bass player, no disrespect to the man but I just don’t think he’s in that elite tier, even as a slap player Wooten or Marcus Miller are in a totally different league from flea.
Who said flea was the best anyway, I don’t know him but I don’t ever recall hearing him say it

Flea is an okay trumpet player too.

Would Tommy Shannon go onstage wearing nothing but one sock? That explains much of Flea's appeal.

Just as an exercise, pick up whatever bass you got layin' around and try filling in for "Crossfire"... Seriously, try it...

I did not think that through. I'm going to delete my post. Please delete my quote.

    That comes off really bad.

That slipped past me, too. You can still edit. (“It’s OK, we can fix it in post!”)

Both good bassists. But it’s a tough comparison.

I love Red Hot Chili Peppers, one of my favourite bands.
I think that discussing which bassists are the best and who is better than the other is very hard. But to me the energy that Flea has on stage, his jumping all over the place, his passion and love to make and perform music... he is unique, there is no other like him.

I've seen em' both, ironically on the same night.
    Both are great!
I saw them at Austin Aquafest in 1987.
Aquafest was Austin's week-long summer music festival, pre-ACL and SXSW.
The original RHCP, with Hillel Slovak were on earlier, SRV later.
I prefer Mr. Shannon, though Flea is indeed flashier.
I'm just not a fan of flashy, slappin' bass.
