A friend of mine got me thinking tonight. His "album of the night" was Wildflowers. Admittedly, I haven't listened to the album in years. I lost my cassette. But I do play a good many songs from it. Anyway, he mentioned that it may be his favorite Tom Petty album. It's good, no doubt.

I think mine may be Full Moon Fever. Maybe it's because it's the one I've been listening to the most lately. Maybe it is because it was kind of a stepping stone to the Wilburys. I don't know.

I have a hard time picking out a particular favorite TP song though.

So anyway, I was just wondering what everybody's favorites were, with or with out the Heartbreakers, song or album, to play or just to listen to.

Even the Losers, but he has an amazing catalog with a lot of pick from. I think we could do a whole set of Petty covers and keep people happy.

I just did a whole set of Petty covers for a benefit with some friends. People loved it.

It's really hard to narrow to a favorite, but "You Got Lucky" is way up there at the top for me, just because I love the lyrical cleverness. As a whole album, I probably would have to go with "Wildflowers."

    Favorite song: "The Waiting"

    Favorite album: "Wildflowers"

Those early records have great singles, but IMO there is more filler than classics. Wildflowers is very consistent in the quality of the material, but also pretty varied in style. This makes it a real winner for me.

My favorite album from the Heartbreakers period has to be "Damn The Torpedos"

Damn the Torpedoes was my gateway album, but I couldn't believe how good Hard Promises was when that came out. It's stood the test of time, too.

    Another vote for 'Wildflowers.'

It sounds really warm and genuine to me, but it's melodic and has nice hooks at the same time.

5th album,1983's Long After Dark. Change of Heart. Main reason change of heart, Watching Nick Lowe, opening act. I was watching him backstage during this song and watching Nick cheer them on during the chorus like the producer he is. Then 4 months later, I was watching Jay Leno doing stand up in Hermosa Beach on the strand, and walking into the club arm and arm is Howie Epstein and Carlene Carter. Nick's wife at the time... Howies first album with the heartbreakers, Tom still misses Howie, Anything Tom and Mike do is spectacular. But I know Bob Wilson in Gainesville does not miss Tom

Hey Spike, you're scarin the wife

"You got Lucky" & "American Girl" are 2 of the best songs of all time.

    Tom Petty is a beast.

I've got tickets to see Petty in Evansville In on 5/16. My son is 8, and it'll be his first real show. I think I'm more excited than he is!!!

I can't think of a finer first show. Saw him back in...2008. First time, casual fan. A couple of things hit me- he is a monster performer - no lulls in the show. Secondly, "Crap, I know every song". Seriously like going to a Stones or Beatles show in my book in terms of familiarity (just from radio - I own only Full Moon Fever). Hit after hit after hit. He played 3 hours solid and maybe one of his newer songs I wasn't familiar with. Incredible.

He and Mike Campbell swap out guitars every tune it seems. A real treat for guitar geeks.
