Worked this one up years ago for a cover band project. I always thought it was in F (capo on 1). I mean, the solo is in F minor pentatonic and the song ends on a big F chord. Why does everything online say A#? EDITED - my guess is that someone made a mistake and it just perpetuated throughout the internet, as things tend to do :)

    When I play it with a capo on the first fret, I play D A E | D A E | G D A | G D A | D A E ... and so on.
    No F anywhere.

But then again, I could be totally wrong

Playing those chords with the capo on 1 would put the song in F

Used to do that one, but we did it without the capo.

Only because I sang the song, and Petty is just one of those guys (also Patterson Hood and Jerry Garcia) whose upper range/falsetto chokes me like grandma’s fruitcake.

No one seemed to notice, though. In fact it was always a no-fail crowd pleaser.

Im no pro, but I would think the song should be played in a key that fits the singer's range.

My band plays that one....used to use a capo on 1, but eventually just stopped using it and play it open...D,A,E....and so on. Fun song when the band really hits it well...and people do sing along.

I always thought it was in E. Is it different on the record?

    I'm no music theory guy, but with these chords: D A E | D A E | G D A | G D A | D A E I'd say it's in A. So if capo'd, yes it would be in A#. Why?
Because the first chord or order of chords isn't the main thing for defining the key. A is the root chord, E is the 5th, D is the 4th.
ie: It's just Cowboy chords but played starting with the 4. Many songs start on the 4.

The root chord is F; an E shape played with a capo on the 1st fret. If one mistaked the root chord to be A with a capo on the 1st fret, logic would suggest that the root is A#. However, the chord progression is a flat-7th > 4 > 1. Maybe it's a minor 7th- this is where theory loses me... is it a flat 7th or a minor 7th? Heck if I know, but the intro/main riff progression is 7-4-1.

Watch the Mike Campbell Rig Rundown- Mike has one guitar tuned to F just for that song. If you don't have a capo/don't want to tune up, you can play it in E. It's just not quite as crisp sounding a half step down.

EDIT: sorry if I sound like a song dick; I don't intend to...

Me too. It still hurts, and I figure it will for a long time yet. He's the reason I play. My first real rock n roll show was the Dogs with Wings tour in '95.

I think number system would be just as you said, 7 - 4 - 1. Just 7 or dominant 7.
