Hmm, it's funny, I agree with your analysis but that's the reason I prefer Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
You're arguably right about Sultans, probably the nearest is "Runnin down a dream" but that's the nearest they really get to a purely guitar driven rock song. But, I think it's on purpose. Mike Campbell has that in his bag. But that's not what the heartbreakers were about. They served the song.
I do like them both, but for me, Petty is God.
Oh, and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers in 1994 is the best rock and roll live band to ever exist. Has to be 1994, before Stan Lynch quits, Howie Epsteins backing vox are perfect... just

You guys are crazy. Dire Straits hands down. Just looking at his face, I do not like Tom Petty (rich kid with a goofy smirk and a leathery face). His nasally voice is also annoying to me. If you enjoy him, that is fine, to each their own.

They actually played together at the same time.
In Australia, 1986, TP & The H were backing Dylan when Knopfler joined the show one night.
Other coincidences, they both worked with producer Jimmy Iovine and Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone played with Dire Straits at Knebworth in 1990.
How come when people talk about Dire Straits they don't mention Pick Withers? Imo he's a good a drummer as Mark is a player. Go back and listen to those first two DS albums again.

Sultans of Swing eclipsed everything Petty ever did. I wouldn't really care as much if I didn't hear another Petty song the rest of my days, but I would be bummed if I couldn't listen to SoS again.

Petty got my vote, but Brothers in Arms was a great album. It was released about same time as CD players. Many stereo stores used that CD to demo their sound systems.

I voted Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Not to poo-poo on Dire Straits at all. Some of their songs are glorious!
(Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Iron Hand etc.)
However... Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are never as sleep inducing as Dire Straits can be at times.
Also... TPATHB are generally much more fun to watch.

I disagree that they are quite different.
I dont know about cooler but I would say that Knopfler is a superior guitarist than Campbell easily.
I would rank Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet and Telegraph Road over any Tom Petty song.

I'm a fan of both and for different reasons! Knopfler's picking style and ability to write some great tunes over the years is without a doubt one of the best! He brought something new to the world.
I listen to Petty and come away with a different perspective on his songs and writing. They are the best for his ability to take what seems like a simple chord structure with lyrics and turn it into some great music! I listen to the Wallflower CD and every song has its own quality and individuality without sounding repetitive like other artists who sometimes get stuck in a stylistic rut. How can you compare these two?? Apples and Oranges as they say. Both are great in their own way! Not a fan of surveys since its always skewed. Popularity polls are one thing, judging the music for various artistic style, quality and uniqueness is another.

Gotta abstain from voting, both have great music.
I can honestly only name 2 Dire songs. And I could listen to Tom Petty all day long. Mark K is a great guitar player. But Petty and crew have better songs and more great songs. I don’t dislike Dire Straits but Petty/Campbell is one of the best teams in pop music all time.

Not a fan of either band but there are few bands more bland than Dire Straits. They are a band whose whole asthetic is background music. Just an aweful, aweful excuse for a rock band. Tom Petty by default.
