    Hi.

So, maybe old news, but I just found out Neil Young’s record company once sued him for making music “uncharacteristic of Neil Young.”

Record companies typically know very little about records.

    Hi again.

Okay, so that’s where my draft went! Somehow it got posted while I was looking for a link.

Like this one. Scroll down to the ‘Lawsuit’ section. I see too, Warrent has added a link as well. Thanks.

I could see that, it is the music BUSINESS, I assume they figured he was screwing them financially because how can you sell an album of experimental uncharacteristic music?

That’s my ignorant assumption without reading any information

I bet Lou reeds label wish they would have sued over metal machine music

Yes we live in a country/culture full of lawyers, some good some bad

John Fogerty got sued by his record company for plagiarizing his own song !!!

I’m sure they had rights to the publishing

Now how they acquired the publishing is another story and the real swindle of the band

Or you could do what George Harrison did. He bought He's So Fine to avoid continuance on Here Comes the Sun

I think you meant My Sweet Lord but its an interesting point nonetheless. I think Allen Klein also got involved in that dispute.

Kudos to NY for following the muse. That is the difference between regurgitating your old work and staying fresh. Those albums weren't my favorites, but I bought them to support the artist if nothing else. There were good tunes and throwaways on each one. You can say that about almost every album ever made. I think Geffen had a point, but ended up embarrassing themselves in the long run. I believe Neil and many others have shown artists produce their best work when not under someone's thumb.

I am still waiting for his Christmas album...

I agree with Geffen on this. They signed Neil Young, not a techno-rockabilly outfit. This is an investment not a random talent show.

I'd need to read the contract before I can form an opinion; these contracts are extremely detailed. David Geffen could be a real tool, and perhaps Neil had gotten fed up and this was his way of telling Dave to stuff it.

Geffen demanding a rock album reminds me of the story of Malcom McLaren asking the Sex Pistols to write an S&M song about submission. So they duly wrote 'Submission'.....about a submarine mission (for you baby)

Young has always had more than one musical persona, imho. I like his explanatory nature. What he has done Crazy Horse is quite different from say Harvest, right? I saw him perform the “Trans” album solo and thoroughly enjoyed it. He had performed much of his acoustic based music solo, took a break, and came back onstage with his White Falcon, a headset mic, and a computer rig on the side of the stage. Totally enjoyed it...and the contrast with the folk-oriented acoustic set did not bother me in the least. And yes, I have the Trans album in my collection.

I don't know if this is the case here, but sometimes an artist is under contractual obligation to deliver an album, (possible a "final" album) and they present any piece of garbage to fulfill that obligation.....and then move on.

From my understanding, both are difficult people. But I am sure Geffen did his research before signing a rock icon.

I also saw Young perform with his country band, The International Harvesters. He is difficult to pigeonhole, it seems by his long record in the business.
