Part 1

About a month ago a friend of mine down the street called me. He flips desirable/collectable furniture on the side, to help pay for his kids' school. He's got a garage full of very cool items, and a couple of booths around town at various used furniture hot-spots.

His call was this - "Hey man, I've come across a set of Klipsch speakers, and I know how much you enjoy speakers, and I think I've see some Klipsch speakers in your house, no? [I have two pair of Klipsch Heresys]. Can I send you pics of these and you tell me if they're worth buying?" ME: Sure.

So he sends me pics. The speakers were Klipsch Chorus I models, in flat out mint condition. Oiled oak finish. Price was $50. The Chorus I was introduced in 1990, and very short lived... replaced by the Chorus II... which brought immediate upgrades. But the Chorus I is a great, great speaker... especially if you plan on adding a separate subwoofer, which most people do these days. But $50??? Wow. Yep - I told him to buy them immediately. He said, "What are they worth?" I looked it up real quick... just depending on the market, really... maybe $750??? Maybe more??

So... he decides to buy them, and flip them... to fund his kids' school. There's no way I can get into these speakers myself. Not fair to offer him $50... or even $100... or even $200... since he's needing the margin for his family budget.

But what did he do? He bought them, then brought them to my house to test out, because he didn't have anything to connect them to. And here they sit... for a month now, connected in my music room, with a Martin Logan subwoofer. I've been enjoying the heck out of these speakers, to the point that I was coveting them. Just beautiful, and wonderful warm sound.

I've tried and tried to figure a way to own these speakers, but I can't afford to pay him what they're worth. So I've been trying to convince him to keep them for himself, and I'd even throw in a spare Yamaha receiver that I have... just to get him interested in keeping them... but he's going to put them up for sale soon. :(

PART 2

Friday last week, I was doodling around town with my wife and dog. We stopped to get a burger... stopped at a dog park... walked around a town square down the road a bit. I saw a thrift store, so I decided to check it out. Wife stayed in the truck with the dog and the A/C going.

I walked around for about 5 mins, when I noticed a rather large set of "house speakers" over by the furniture. As I got closer I recognized them.... Klipsch... and got even closer... Klipsch Chorus II models... in factory black (which is my favorite actually). Price? $9.99 a piece. UNREAL

Bought'em... got'em home... plugged'em in... all drivers working properly. UNREAL. They do need to be refinished, but I do that all the time anyway - I'm all set up to do it already - supplies and all.

So now... I brought everything upstairs for the moment (these speakers are like 75 pounds each). And as of last night, we're currently enjoying 7point surround with the Chorus IIs up front for the mains... and the Chorus Is for rear surround... Heresys for side fill and center. And I've got a set of Martin Logan slims for height. Its just completely unreal.

haha

mate, I love a good thrift store bargain! and wow, you lucked out there.
since the interwebs it seems bargains have all but disappeared. people just google them and find out what they're worth. perhaps I need to get deep into the country and find some backwater where they don't get wifi (wiffy)
in fat I do daydream about getting a stack of £20 notes and drive deep into Somerset and look at all the guitar shops, second hand shops, see if I can find a bargain
" it's a '53 telecaster you say Jim? ahhhh shame, the '53's were a really bad year... I can give you a hundred for it, but it'll probbly be for the boy, you know, he can't play yet"
that's my dream :D

Well, I hope to make somebody's day later this week - we'll be loading a set of SpeakerLab 2 into the trunk and dropping 'em off at Deseret Thrift out in Shoreline.
May do the same w/ Mrs Deeve's SpeakerLab 7's - I built them for her in the mid 80s when we were just getting acquainted . . . They just hammered the walls of her lil apartment!

One of my fraternity brothers built a pair of SpeakerLab K Horns when we were in school. They worked well in a big party room. I still have my Boston Acoustics A100s from the early 80s. I replaced the woofers with OEM parts the first time they wore out, back before you could find repair kits for foam surrounds. When the surrounds wore out the second time, coincident with tweeters failing due to a bad transient when powering down my old preamp, I did a complete refurbish. Newer model Seas tweeters matched as closely as possible to the original ones, new surrounds for the woofers, and replacement of all the electrolytic caps with mylar. They still sound as good to me as they ever did, but I'm lusting after Boston Acoustics A400s... As others have mentioned, with internet research available, it's about impossible to find the $50 deals...
