yesterday in my scoutings I hit a thrift store I immediately focused on the 27 inch Imac they had there but the price was too high , and off to the side I found a second gen 10.5 inch Ipad asking price was 50.00 , I got it for 35.00 with charger and cable . Got it home and after several attempts could not unlock the unit , on the back of the Ipad was a company name and phone # I called it and talked to the receptionist , I had noticed the previous owner was K*********@gmail .com, I gave her that info , either one of 2 things happened, 1) they dumped the Ipad because it was a second gen,
2) it was stolen , I told her I donot want any stolen items in my house at all.

Just got a phone call back the item was alledgedly stolen ( they are looking into it from their end) we made arrangements to return the Ipad to them , we'll do this tomorrow

I guess the point is be carefull if buying used items of Value

Ya never know !
BTW the company reimbursed me my 35.00 , very cool

A gen 2 ipad is pretty much a drink coaster these days
agreed but for holding editors for my equiptment , like the Roland GR55, Eventide H9 Max, Korg kaosolators , etc I only need IOS-9 minimum, I dont use them for all the app stuff , I have 8 computers in the studio for that and 1 PC

as an editor controller it is perfect.

My daughter’s car was broken into and her friend’s iPad was among the contents. They found it on “find my phone” app at a pawn shop but the police wouldn’t come. This was Houston TX. That app is pretty cool. I’m glad she is smart enough to not challenge a person trafficking stolen property on her own.

I am surprised a pawn shop would actually accept something like that unless the person unlocked it and removed any passwords for them. How would they be able to sell it?

With second hand phones/tablets, always make sure it can be opened into the OS before purchase. It does not guarantee it was not stolen, but it does prove it is usable. If it cannot be opened, it was stolen.

in the store the unit had 43% battery life and the item opened for set up , it came with the charger and cable. it was not untill I did the update that the lock showed up , the update completed before the lock , but it did give me the owners name, and on the back of the unit it had the company's name and phone number , which I contacted to see if they had retired the unit at whih case I could get the password etc, or in a different scenario the item was stolen , as it turned out it was stolen , but I was able to identify the actual employee of the company that owned it .

Most pawn shops in Canada have to report all transactions daily to the police at least that was the process when I worked for one of the major stores in Vancouver, serial make model and all identifiers are recorded including the name , etc of the parties on the reciept

It sounds like she’s not going to get it back if she doesn’t. You should teach your kids to stand up for themselves better than that.

Don’t worry. I said the friend, the owner of the iPad is a detective for another police department. She’s taken care of the situation, shall we say. When she got home she went to work on the owner of the shop and his staff and has gotten the store searched several times. She won’t let it go. Neither will my daughter.

But you teach your daughter not to go into a methy pawn shop in Houston late evening and make demands. iPad isn’t worth getting shot.

you can factory reset an ipad with a computer and no access to the OS. used devices should always be reset/reformatted at minimum. if you can replace the hard drive, better still.

simply "unlocking it and removing any passwords" and passing it on is pretty much the worst thing you could do as far as privacy and security. nobody should be doing that under any circumstances.

If everyone is packing in Houston, y’all should be packing too.

OP, what are you doing on this site? You did the right thing and got rewarded for it - how are we supposed to maintain our jaded and skeptical attitude with a post like this? You, sir, are a blight on the “get off my lawn” segment of our membership, which at last check was 94.7% of the total.
Good day.

Sir I will let you know that;

1) I am in posession of a large amount of musical gear , moulding into my dream studio ( all mine ) and one stolen, stupid I pad in my posession will earn me the right to have all my gear confiscated until determined otherwise.

2) this will severely cut into my well earned fun time and time left on this planet , until I loose continence at the table and can not remember my families members names.

3 ) these events will make me a card packing union member of the G.O.M.L. , an organization who's sole purpose is to strip the rights and joys away from the well earned I.W.H.A.M.F.F.T.R.O.M.D commitee.

G.O.M.L = Get off My Lawn, Brotherhood
I.W.H A.M.F.F.T.R.O.M.D = I Will Have As Much Fun For The Rest Of My Days , Commitee
( this includes panty raids at the home, but that depends)

I found a newer Iphone a few years ago at Softball complex (6 fields)

It was locked... So I walked around, asking if anyone was missing an Iphone.. Wouldn't you know, It belonged to every other person I asked....

I told them to unlock it, or have a friend call it... and I'd hand it over.

After about 30 POS low-lifes, I finally found Cinderella.
