I recently borrowed a friends PRS SE Singlecut, and it was awesome. Neck pickup was beautifully warm and clear, the guitar was light, and the neck was perfect for me. So I’m Looking into getting a PRS of my own now, used. I’m pretty intrigued by the SE One, as it’s got just the one pickup, a P90 (which I’ve never had). I like the look, and know those SE necks fit me well. I’m sure I could have some fun with that pickup arrangement. Anyone here using one, what’ya think of it?

I had one for a while. They're fun guitars, Smith's take on a Les Paul Junior. The P-90 and single volume control scare a lot of people away, but the guitar is a lot more versatile than you might think. And PRS puts a treble bleed circuit on the volume control so you don't lose the high end when you back off the volume a bit. That'll get you close to Tele territory, which is kinda surprising for a P-90.

I've seen guys mod them and put a tone control in, but I didn't think it was necessary. I had a sunburst, but they made a Korina model that's a really handsome guitar.

I’m sure I can. My main guitar is a Jackson Dinky Pro, and I’ve also got a Partscaster I put together. I loooove neck humbuckers, but have that covered with the Jackson.

Yeah, there’s a couple Korina models on Reverb, but they’re a bit more $. They’re dead sexy tho.... I like having something that’s a little different than the norm. But..... I love that mahogany warmth too. I think the two models (mahogany vs korina) would be similar in tone, right?

A friend had a Korina one, but I never got to play it so I can't speak to any difference in tone.

The mahogany one was a rockin' guitar, for sure. I've had a few PRS guitars, and for some reason I've never been comfortable with the wide flat neck. It sounded pretty amazing, though.

Posted above my 2009 SE One. I loved the neck and P90....I compared it to my 1960 Les Paul Jr doublecut and it sounded almost identical. But, I missed the tone control, and wanted the versatility of a neck pickup. First pic is where I just added tone control on pickguard, but I didn't like the location. Second pic, after I added neck pickup, and rear-routed for volume and tone controls...much like a LP Jr.....used the original volume location on pickguard for P/U selector switch. BTW....it plays perfectly in tune with the wrap-around bridge. While my Telecaster is still #1....I consider this to be my #1.5.

Love p90s but so much to come from having neck AND bridge

Depends if you happy to risk boredom and moving it on

Just finished modding mine!
I love this guitar, it's my favorite electric - and my others are all much more expensive. Mine came with a Duncan antiquity pickup so I can't tell you about the original P90.
It does not NEED anything, even a tone control. But it is also a great base from which to do something a little bit different. I'm currently debating whether to add a Bigsby to this...

I really appreciate everyone’s input. I’m looking through eBay and Reverb now and see several right around the $450 mark.

There's also an SE Soapbar and Soapbar 2 with a plain flat top double cut shape - they don't look as cool but they are basically the same deal with a neck pickup, and they go for cheap. You can pick up any of the SE models for $300 if you look around - I think they are the best value going.

.

I have the Singlecut dual P90 and it's a lot of fun that I bought used a few years back. I started with an ebay set of P90s for $15 that I put in my Strat test rig and learned how much fun P90s were, and how much more versatile they are than the humbuckers that replaced them. So when I saw a P90 PRS show up locally I got it.

I watch for the "ONE"s but they run too pricey for me since I already have the other one.

Best mod I saw for the "ONE"s was a Tele neck pickup ,mounted square to the neck like a Tele not angled, and concentric pots for Volume and Tone. Dark burst with a tortoise pickguard, black P90, and the silver Tele neck pickup -- looked sharp.

I had a PRS SE Soapbar Maple II, (or something to that effect) that I regularly played for 5-6 years. It came in a really nice gig bag and the layout was; double cut, two P-90's, one vol one tone. I have sent it along it's journey to make room for something else, but absolutely no knocks against the guitar.

It was very well made and I actually chose to play it instead of my Am Std Strats and Teles one year at the Christmas concert our Church presents. Mind you, not because it was "better" but because it was a change of pace. It played and sounded wonderful and I never found the P-90's to be that noisy.

One of my current "wants" is a Les Paul Junior but they can REALLY be spendy. If I came across a sweet deal on a SE One, I'd not hesitate.

Because I own other guitars with neck pickups I would not add one to this model. It really seems to defeat the purpose. I might add a dual purpose concentric pot and set it up as VOL/Tone. I'd have to play around with it first to see if I thought it necessary.

I've owned mine for several years now and it's still one of the first guitars I reach for. The single P90 is more than enough variety on this guitar with a little use of the volume knob.
