Thoughts on Fender's pickups (Eric Johnson set vs 57/62 set)

As few of you know, I put the Seymour Duncan Cory Wong signature "Clean Machine" set in my strat but they didn't work out due to some issues. I don't care to get into it - it just didn't work out. I'm trading in the Cory Wong set and getting a whole other set. While doing loads of research, I've found that the 50's style pleases my ears, personally, the most. My other strat has the Seymour Duncan Jimi Hendrix set which sounds late 60's early 70's, it pushes the amp to where some of the notes get a naturally fuzz-like quality while remaining clear. I love that.


Anyway,
Does anyone have any experience with the Fender Eric Johnson set or the 52/67 set? I know many have called the 57/62 set the "John Frusciante" set, they are that good, they have that glassy tone, they are Alnico 5 magnets BUT maybe the Eric Johnson is more smoother since it is a Alnico 2 and 5 hybrid set. They both sound great in the videos


I'm pretty set on these two sets as they both have the sound I want. That said, PLEASE no recommendations to anything else, it's not about me being closed minded. I know there are tons of great pickups out there but I'm respected everyone enough to let you know before you waste your time.

Of the three, I think the EJ’s are the best choice.
They sound great, and balance well.
Eric worked diligently with the winders/designers at Fender to get them right.
I prefer the 62’s to the 57’s, personally, too.
The 57s sound really bright, the 62’s somewhat less so.

I love the Eric Johnson pups. Compared to other strat sets (including the 57/62), they sound great in every pickup position, 1-5. I found the bridge position almost unusable on the 57/62 set, where the EJs sound fantastic.

Thanks guys, I was about to pull the trigger on the hybrid set (the 57/62 set which combines pickups from the 57 and the 62 sets) but then I saw the Eric Johnson set.

I just ordered the EJ set from Sweetwater! I'm also gonna be putting in a VegaTrem so I'm excited as the set I put in recently just didn't work out.

The 57/62 set were way to "woody, airy and bright" for me is all I can say. But it sounds like you like the low wind, so I would take that with a grain of salt. I use the Tex Mex so we are in different worlds!

What does the Tex-Mex sound like? How would you describe them?

Yes, it's true, when it comes to Strats, I do prefer the woody/glassy 50's tones over say, the 60's more bassy "full" tone. I do love the Seymour Duncan Hendrix set though, and they are like more of a conceptual/experimental set, in my opinion.

The Tex Mex are big and bold with good lows. On the Bridge a little less crisp/sparkly on the highs, but certainly not warm highs (it's a strat!) I'm more of a Blues bass player though. I also like to have the Neck and Mid pickups on a Strat down a bit.

I love the EJ set...I bought my EJ strat new in 2013 and it needed to be refretted by 2018, the only strat I have ever worn out frets on.

Note the cap value that EJ uses--.1 I think. And my only wiring mod is to jumper the neck and mid pickups together on the tone control side because I like the tone control on the mid pickup.
