This You Tuber went to a recent Aerosmith show in Baltimore and ended up right in front of Joe Perry's monitor which over-powered the rest of the band mix and isolated Joe's dry guitar signal due to the limitations of smart phone recording. So what you get is mostly Joe's loose and sloppy guitar, loud and clear.

To me it's very interesting to hear his live playing this way. Would love to hear Brad's live playing isolated like this.

I don't think it's bad, it's just interesting to hear his dry signal without all the bells and whistles going through the PA.

Kind of sad to me. He's bored or mad. Pretty mechanical playing.

It’s difficult to really criticize someone like that. He’s been around as a guitar “hero” for decades. If it was just the bad tone itself i would say there is something not right about his rig, but with the sloppy playing maybe his technique is just not up to par anymore. Still better than me of course but as a fan I’m somewhat disappointed. I don’t really care much for Aerosmith but I’ve always thought Perry had good riffs and leads.

So the op is in front of Joe's monitor yet gets all those camera angles?
    I doubt that.
Likely the sound of those videos are coming off the board and the video was matched up later.

it's interesting that a few have posted along the lines of "I sound like that" or "my girlfriend says I sound like that".

That's the thing! Rock and roll is not necessarily difficult, it is not a higher art; it is not something that only a few special people can do. YOU can do it. I can do it. These guys aren't inspired or directed by Satan or the good Lord. They are just guys who play the guitar. Strap it on, listen to the rhythm section - the true heart of the group - and play some stuff. Doesn't have to be technically proficient, or virtuoso quality. It just has to fit in there and sound good.

I spent a few years wishing I could sound like "those guys". Until one day I realized that I could sound just as good as many of them; better than some; and almost as good as the very best, if I used my skills and knowledge of the instrument to compensate.

It's only rock & roll. Ragged but right. Sloppy but swinging. All of what JHundt said!

Aerosmith's stuff is made for loose but right. I don't see a problem (for the couple minutes I listened in). Interesting video grabs.

If you notice, when he changes the angle, the sound changes dramatically. I asked him about it and he confirmed that the monitor was so loud that that is what the camera picked up. Joe still uses old school monitors and he likes just his dry signal and a little drums in it. As far as mechanical, with these type of shows, it has to be somewhat, everything is timed out, choreographed and played to a click track to keep all the lighting and video stuff on cue.

Also, I didn't say the tone was bad, I don't think it is, but it's certainly a lot different than what comes out through the PA after it has gone through whatever effects he's using.

So when the camera angle changes (a lot) , the videographer gets to the new position instantly?
Or, a mash up if lots of clips?
Maybe all their performances are so much the same that this could be pieced together? and make the video match?
Naw, that came off the board.

Really? I find those camera angles are quite straight forward. the edge of the front of the stage and get blasted by the monitor, turn around when someones uses the catwalk. interestingly the sound from the stage then gets drowned out drastically. which soundboard feed would send out that signal? I guess it's the camera mic picking up the sound you see through the lens.
which leads me to believe no smart phone was used but a DSLR with a pretty good microphone.
